The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a secondary wrestling title of the US promotion WWE , which is awarded exclusively to male individual wrestlers of the SmackDown rooster. The title was introduced on September 1, 1979 after Pat Patterson combined the North American Heavyweight and South American Heavyweight Championships . Today it is the third oldest active title in the WWE and is equivalent to the United States Championship . The current title holder in his fifth reign is Jeff Hardy . As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .

history

The title emerged in 1979 as the WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship from the North American Championship of the then WWF . The first title holder was Pat Patterson . The storyline stated that Patterson had combined his title with a South American Championship after defeating the last North American Champion, Ted DiBiase ; Patterson won this in a (actually fictional) tournament in Rio de Janeiro.

Many future World Champions initially held this title, which allowed them to gain their first experience as champions. Wrestlers like Randy Savage , Bret Hart , Shawn Michaels , Chris Jericho , The Rock and Triple H only became Intercontinental Champions before becoming WWE Champions . Originally, the Intercontinental Champion was always seen as the top challenger to the world heavyweight title, with matches between the two titleholders always being the exception. In 1999, Chyna was the first woman to win the title. With the exception of two subsequent reigns of Chyna, this was an exception so far. Chyna was also part of another unique event in the history of the Intercontinental Championship : After a controversial decision in a title match, she briefly had to share the title with Chris Jericho.

For many years, the Intercontinental Championship was the second most important title in the league and only lost its importance after the takeover of WCW and the division of the two roster in 2002. Since there were now a lot of titles in the WWE at that time, the Intercontinental Championship was part of several title associations. The then title holder Rob Van Dam first defeated European Champion Jeff Hardy and Hardcore Champion Tommy Dreamer , so that these two titles went up in the Intercontinental Championship . In October 2002 Kane lost the Intercontinental Title to Triple H , who then united him with his World Heavyweight Championship .

Since the traditional title was very popular among the fans, the abolition was received very negatively. In May 2003, the renamed WWE league reintroduced the title and had the first champion in a Battle Royal between 20 former titleholders. Christian won the match by eliminating Booker T and thus entered his second reign.

Since then, the Intercontinental Championship has been one of the two midcard titles with no weight limit in the WWE, alongside the United States Championship . The Intercontinental Championship was initially the second highest title on Raw , from 2009 on SmackDown . After the temporary end of the roster split, the title was defended in both shows from 2011. Since 2016, the title has been defended exclusively at a show.

In October 2011, the then champion Cody Rhodes reintroduced the classic Intercontinental Champion seal with a white ribbon and updated decorations (among other things, the WWF logo was replaced by the current WWE logo) at the major event Hell In A Cell . Since then, this belt, which was previously awarded in the WWF from 1986 to 1998, has been used as the current title belt.

Sami Zayn revealed a new design in the November 22, 2019 issue of SmackDown . The redesigned title belt has a black belt and two removable side panels.
