British film director Stephen Frears ( The Queen )

The 60th British Academy Film Awards took place on February 11, 2007 at the Royal Opera House , London . Stephen Frears ' highly acclaimed Elizabeth II was the favorite for the UK's most important film award . -Biography The Queen with Helen Mirren in the title role. The British-French-Italian co-production was able to hope for ten awards and finally prevailed in the categories of Best Film and Best Actress (Mirren). Only Guillermo del Toros Pan's Labyrinth and Kevin Macdonald's The Last King of Scotland - In the Clutches of Power were more successful . Del Toro's fairytale film about a young girl who took refuge in a dream world during the Franco regime after World War II won the prizes as the best non-English-language production against, among others, Pedro Almodóvar's Volver - Returning and Mel Gibson's Apocalypto for mask and costumes. Macdonald's political biography about the atrocities of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's (1928–2003) won the Golden Globe Award- winning Forest Whitaker the trophy for Best Actor and was honored for Best British Film Production of the Year and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The American comedy Little Miss Sunshine and the dramas Flug 93 and Children of Men also won two awards . For Casino Royale , Bond girl Eva Green was victorious as the best young actress ( Orange Rising Star Award ) and the sound engineer, while title hero Daniel Craig was able to celebrate a success just by being nominated for best leading actor. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts , which has been awarding the film prizes since 1948, had previously ignored all acting performances of the 007 actors. Flight 93 , which takes on the US trauma of September 11, 2001 together with Oliver Stone's World Trade Center , was awarded, among other things, the director's award. The Briton Paul Greengrass prevailed against Alejandro González Iñárritu ( Babel ) and Martin Scorsese ( Departed - Unter Feinden ). González Iñárritu's modern parable of the biblical tower could only win the award for the best film music, while Scorsese's gangster film with Leonardo DiCaprio , Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson in the leading roles remained unprivileged. At the 79th Academy Awards on February 25, 2007, both films were given great opportunities to receive the Academy Award for best film of the year.

On the other hand, Sacha Baron Cohen's mockumentary Borat about the experiences of an alleged Kazakh TV reporter in the USA was not able to leave an impression when the nominations were announced . The mockumentary grossed more than 116 million US dollars (approx. 88.5 million euros) in the USA. Bill Condon's musical adaptation of Dreamgirls received only two nominations and received three prizes at the 2007 Golden Globe Awards . Supporting actress Jennifer Hudson was able to live up to her favorite status and also won the BAFTA Award after the Golden Globe. However, no consideration was Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's film The Lives of Others , which started in British cinemas until 13 April, 2007. The award-winning German contribution for an Oscar nomination as best foreign-language film production won the 2006 European Film Awards against Pedro Almodóvar's tragic comedy Volver - Returning, which had been nominated twice for the BAFTA Award .
