About this picture

Flacht is a municipality in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the municipality of Aar-Einrich .

geography

Flat lies in the Taunus four kilometers south of Limburg an der Lahn . The local community is located in the flattest area of the Aartal on the lower Aar .

The Birkenhof and Hof Waldeck residential areas also belong to Flacht .

history

On February 17, 881, a church in Flachta was mentioned for the first time in a document from the Prüm Abbey (also called Wlattke there) .

There are various explanations for the origin of the name. One of them leads the name back to the location of the place in the "flat". Another derives the name from the Old High German word “flahta” for lichen, meaning “plaited, fence, hurdle” and the then common practice of building fences to protect against intruders and wild animals. Another explanation traces the origin of the name back to the word “flak” for water.

In the Middle Ages, Flacht belonged to the “Fuchsenhell” forest market cooperative . In addition, Flacht was the center of a parish to which Niederneisen , Holzheim and Linter were parish.

In the 17th century, Flacht came to the Nassau family . In 1806 the Diez office and thus the parish of Flacht were assigned to the Duchy of Nassau for the first time , from 1813 to 1815 Flacht returned briefly to Nassau-Orange, only to be part of the Duchy of Nassau until it was annexed by Prussia in 1866. From 1867 until its dissolution and the formation of the Rhein-Lahn district , Flacht belonged to the Unterlahn district .

The first Flachter school was built in 1835 and an extension was added in 1902/03. School operations were relocated to Niederneisen for the 1973/74 school year. In 1850 the place got three fountains , in 1899 a water pipe. The post office established in 1887 received a telephone connection in 1905. The Flachter Bahnhof was built in 1900, the town hall in 1910, the Protestant parish hall in 1939, the first sports field in 1949 and a new sports field in 1980.

The population developed as follows in the 19th and 20th centuries: 1843: 545 inhabitants, 1927: 692 inhabitants, 1964: 863 inhabitants.

religion

Evangelical parish of Flacht

The neighboring villages of Niederneisen and Holzheim belong to the evangelical parish of Flacht . The parish belongs to the Evangelical Dean's Office Nassauer Land. Flacht has been Protestant since the Reformation in the mid-16th century.

Judaism

Memorial stone Jewish victims

In the absence of documents, it cannot be said from when Jews lived in Flacht. Evidence of Jewish citizens in Flacht is only available for the period from the middle of the 18th century. The Jewish community in Flacht applied for the construction of a synagogue several times, but these were rejected several times. Therefore, "private prayer rooms" were set up alternately in private houses. In 1928 the community inherited the house "Hauptstrasse 35" on the ground floor of which a synagogue was set up. In the period from 1843 to 1933, between 29 and 35 Jewish citizens were counted. By 1938 the number had dropped to twelve. During the November pogroms of 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was destroyed, Torah scrolls , prayer books and Torah pennants were thrown on the street and the cemetery was devastated. On November 11, 1938, the remaining adult males were deported to concentration camps. In 1939 there were no more Jewish citizens in Flacht.

In 1962, Jehuda Leopold Frank erected a memorial in the Jewish cemetery with the following inscription:

In memory
of the Jewish fellow citizens of Flacht and Niederneisen who perished in the
National Socialist
concentration
camps

Furthermore, this memorial bears the names of 21 Jewish citizens from Flacht and Niederneisen who were murdered in concentration camps.

coat of arms

Flacht coat of arms
Blazon : "Split shield, in front in red two blue-armored, golden lions growing out of the gap, behind in gold a red goblet ( ciborium )."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The place, which came from the inheritance of the Counts of Diez, had an S (IGEL) DES COURT ZV FLACHT, which is documented from 1553 to 1635. It shows a saint growing above the Diez leopard shield, holding a bishop's staff in his right hand and the chalice in his left. This seal image cannot be addressed as a coat of arms, so that we characterize the (not to be determined) patron saint by his attribute and bring this into a heraldic connection with the emblem of the old rulers. The tinging is based on the Diezische colors. The community seals since 1816 did not contain a picture.

Buildings

Protestant church

The church, mentioned in the first mention of Flacht in 881, and belonging to the Prüm Abbey , passed to the St. Florin Foundation in Koblenz at an unknown time before 1226 and remained its property until the Reformation . The four-gabled west tower is the oldest part of the church and indicates a construction time around 1200. The choir is Gothic and shows exposed wall paintings. The nave was built around 1700 and has been in its current form since 1778. The interior of the church is characterized by baroque furnishings; The organ front and pulpit also come from this era . There are galleries on three sides, which are supported by Tuscan columns . The church has three bells, the oldest of which, "Anna", was made in 1499. In 1838 there were again major alterations to the church and from 1968 to 1969 a thorough renovation, during which two grave slabs from the 17th century were discovered.

Old flat mill

"Undig der Kirche" was first mentioned in 1405 as a flour mill, which at that time, like the church, was owned by the St. Florin Foundation in Koblenz. In 1604 it passed into the possession of the sovereign, since 1873 it has been privately owned.

Aartalhalle

In 1889 the Turn- und Fechtclub e. V. built a gym, which was renovated and expanded in 1931 and 1966. From 2008 to 2009 the hall was renovated for 1.4 million euros.
