Cycle superhighways in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands there is a broad network of cycle superhighways ( Dutch fietssnelwegen or snelfietsroutes ), which currently has more than 300 kilometers of routes. Alongside Belgium and Denmark, the Netherlands are pioneers in the construction of cycle superhighways across Europe. As early as the 1980s, there were initial efforts to build high-speed cycle paths.

The first cycle superhighway in the Netherlands was tested in The Hague in 1980 and was intended to relieve urban car traffic. However, the real high phase, in which numerous new routes were built, began at the beginning of the 21st century: The starting signal was the construction of a cycle expressway between Breda and Etten-Leur , the construction phase of which began in 2003 and was completed with the opening at the end of 2004 has been. In 2006, the then Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat, now part of the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat , set up the Fiets filevrij project to encourage motorists to cycle to work. This goal should be promoted with the creation of a network of cycle superhighways. By 2008 the number rose to five routes, which at that time were mainly concentrated in the Randstad agglomeration . In the years that followed, the first sections of the F35 high-speed cycle route between Nijverdal and Enschede were built, which at around 60 kilometers is the longest route in the Netherlands to date. The phenomenon of the cycle superhighways also caught on in the south of the Netherlands, in the province of Noord-Brabant . Eleven routes are to be laid there by 2025.

The fastest possible connections in the cycle traffic network should be created through cycle superhighways and cyclists should be given priority. At the same time, however, the dangers for cyclists from car traffic should also be minimized. For example, bicycle bridges and tunnels are being built for this purpose, and they are given priority at intersections.

On the other hand, the intention is to reduce pollution and to follow the concept of sustainability (Dutch duurzaamheid ). A trip on the Via 44 cycle route from The Hague to Leiden over a period of 34 minutes saves 1526 grams of CO 2 emissions.

criticism

In July 2018, the F35 rapid cycle route came under fire . After a new section of the route between Almelo and Vriezenveen was opened on July 17th, there was a traffic accident on the following Thursday at the Aadorpsweg / De Merel intersection. A cyclist driving on Aadorpsweg was hit by a car coming from the direction of De Merel. The cyclist drove parallel to Aadorpsweg on the cycle expressway and was given right of way at the time of the accident. The driver, however, had to wait at the T-junction, which in turn was disregarded. Local residents and cyclists stated that crossing the street was life-threatening for cyclists, even though they have right of way. Most drivers do not know that cyclists have right of way at the intersection. The alderman of the Twenterand community , Bart-Jan Harmsen (Gemeentebelangen Twenterand), is to assess the situation and wants to get in contact with both the local police and experts.

A call by the regional newspaper BD in 2016 was intended to inquire about the experiences of the drivers of the F59 rapid cycle route between 's-Hertogenbosch and Oss . The result of the survey was surprisingly negative. Many citizens fundamentally questioned the necessity of the cycle expressway. In addition, the safety of the path should not be fully guaranteed.

Arnhem - Zevenaar De Liemers / F112 11 completed De Liemers runs from the Airborneplein in Arnhem via Westervoort and Duiven along the Dutch section of the Oberhausen – Arnhem railway to Zevenaar.
Assen - Groningen De Groene As 25th under construction The express cycle route is to lead from Assen to Groningen along the Noord-Willemskanaal . On September 25, 2019, the name of the path was announced: De Groene As ( Dutch "The Green Axis" ). Drentse Deputy Cees Bijl expects the route to open in 2023.
Beuningen –Nijmegen Batavier pad / F173 15.2 completed The Batavierenpad is divided into a northern and a southern section. Both are 7.6 kilometers long each.
Bilthoven - wooden bowl - 13 completed / under construction The route runs east of the A27 through the municipalities of De Bilt , Utrecht, Bunnik and Houten. Breda - Etten-Leur F58 9.5 completed The F58 was at the time it opened in 2004, one of the first Radschnellwege the Netherlands. The route is to be extended via Roosendaal to Bergen op Zoom by 2021 at the earliest .
Breda– Tilburg F58 22nd planned The route should lead from Breda through the municipalities of Oosterhout and Gilze en Rijen to Tilburg and be completed in 2020. Cuijk- Nijmegen MaasWaalpad / F73 11.9 completed / under construction A first section of the rapid cycle route between Molenhoek and Nijmegen was opened on February 23, 2018. The groundbreaking ceremony for a bicycle bridge over the Maas near Mook took place on June 25, 2019. The opening of the bridge is planned for September 2020.

Delft– Rotterdam Alexander - 20th planned In October 2019, plans of the Metropoolregio Rotterdam The Hague were published, showing a route between Delft and Rotterdam Alexander.
The Hague - Leiden Velostrada & Via 44 21st completed The Velostrada runs along the Amsterdam – Rotterdam railway line from The Hague to Leiden. In the north-west, Via 44 runs parallel to Velostrada along Rijksweg 44 .
The Hague – Rotterdam Hofpleinfietsroute 15th planned The route is to lead from Hofvijver , a pond in the center of The Hague on which the Binnenhof and the Mauritshuis are located, along the E subway line of the Rotterdam Metro to Hofplein , a street intersection in Rotterdam.
The Hague - Zoetermeer F12 11.7 completed The F12 runs within sight of the A12 and touches the north-lying Westerpark in Zoetermeer.
Dordrecht - Rotterdam F16 19.7 completed The F16 , which opened on September 9, 2014, runs along the autobahn of the same name, the A16 , through the municipalities of Dordrecht, Zwijndrecht , Ridderkerk, Barendrecht and Rotterdam.
Duiven– Ressen F15 13 planned The route is to run along the future section of the A15 motorway between Knooppunt Ressen and the A12 near Duiven. Its opening is to take place at the same time as the section of the motorway in 2024 and its cost is estimated at 4.5 million euros.
Ede - Veenendaal F112 10 under construction The express cycle route is to lead from Ede-Wageningen station along the Amsterdam – Arnhem railway line to the center of Veenendaal.
Ede- Wageningen - 10 planned The planned route is to connect the city centers of Ede and Wageningen and be financed by the municipalities of Ede and Wageningen as well as the province of Gelderland, Fietsersbond and the state.
Eindhoven - Helmond F270 13.7 under construction The route is to run from Eindhoven Centraal train station via Nuenen , Geldrop and Mierlo to Helmond train station and is to be completed in 2020. The construction of the cycle expressway is expected to cost around ten million euros.
Eindhoven– 's-Hertogenbosch - 33 planned The municipalities of Best , Eindhoven, 's-Hertogenbosch, Vught and Boxtel signed a letter of intent on March 14, 2018 for the planned cycle expressway between Eindhoven and' s-Hertogenbosch. Haarlem– IJmuiden - 11 planned The route should extend from the provincial capital Haarlem to IJmuiden in the municipality of Velsen along the Provinciale 208. In order to implement the cycle expressway, numerous road surfaces have to be improved and in some cases new cycle paths have to be created.
Heerenveen - Leeuwarden - - planned The rapid cycle path is to run from Leeuwarden to Heerenveen and branch off to Sneek . The project is to be implemented between 2020 and 2021 and will cost over five million euros.
's-Hertogenbosch - Oss F59 20.5 completed The route leads from the station 's-Hertogenbosch to Station Oss and connects all stations of Tilburg-Nijmegen railway (' s-Hertogenbosch Oost, Rosmalen and Oss West) that lie along the Radschnellweges each other.

Leeuwarden– Stiens - 5.6 completed The 5.6 kilometer long cycle expressway runs from the edge of the city center of Leeuwarden parallel to Provinciale Weg 357 to the village of Stiens.
Leusden - Nijkerk - 6.8 planned The route should lead from Leusden via Amersfoort to Nijkerk.
Maassluis - Schiedam Hoekselijnpad 12 completed So far, the rapid cycle path has led from Maassluis to Schiedam. However, it is to be expanded to Rotterdam, so that there is a connection between Hook of Holland and Rotterdam.
