Sebastian Mathias Schmidt (born January 6, 1985 in Wiesbaden-Dotzheim ) is a former German oarsman. In 2009 and 2010 he was a member of the Germany eight , which won the World Championships.
Athletic career
Sebastian Schmidt started with school rowing in Wiesbaden, but has long been working for the Mainz rowing club from 1878 . In 2003 he was German youth champion in the four and took second place in the eighth team . A year later he was two-time German champion in the U23 area, as he reached the goal with a few seconds ahead of both in the two without a helmsman and in the eight. He was therefore in eighth at the Nations Cup in Poznan , where he also won. In 2005 he was again German U23 champion in eighth place, but only achieved fourth place in the Nations Cup. In 2006 it was only enough for a silver medal in eighth place at the German U23 championships, together with Kristof Wilke in two without he won both the German title in his age group and at the U23 world championships in Hazewinkel (Belgium). Schmidt stayed in two in 2007 and tried his luck in four: After a German title in both boat types, the four won gold at the U23 World Championships in Strathclyde and silver at the European Championships in Poznań. In the same year, however, he climbed back into eighth, which won the E.ON Hanse Cup . The Olympic year 2008 did not start successfully, however: fourth place at the rowing world cup in Munich , fifth at the rowing world cup in Lucerne and at least a second place at the rowing world cup in Poznan. Far behind but during the Olympic Games, the Germany eighth, who came together late, took last place both in the preliminary run and in the B final. Schmidt had to take a semester off for training. He studied human medicine at the Ruhr University in Bochum , since the base of the Germany eight is in Dortmund.
After extensive changes, however, the eighth was unbeaten for five years: Victory at the e.on Hanse Cup in 2008 and 2009, the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne in 2009 and 2010 and Munich in 2010 as well as the famous Henley Royal Regatta . World champion in eighth in 2009 and 2010 , as well as the 2010 European championship . Schmidt was the batsman of this successful boat for a long time . From 2011, however, he was back in the foursome and, apart from winning the Rowing World Cup in Hamburg, did not take any medals. The 2012 Olympic year brought him, still in the four, even a ninth place. After missing placements in domestic German regattas for qualification, Schmidt started at the Olympic Games in London in a foursome and finished sixth.
Schmidt ended his active career in February 2014.
