The Olympic ice hockey tournament of the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp , Belgium was long considered a demonstration competition and was therefore not part of the official Olympic program. It has only recently been recognized by the IOC as an official Olympic tournament. The Olympic ice hockey tournament was the first national tournament in Europe in which representations from the USA and Canada took part; the tournament was therefore declared the first ice hockey world championship by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) - albeit only in retrospect . The games took place from April 23 to 29, 1920 in the Palais de Glace .
A total of seven national teams took part; the tournament was played in the Bergvall system . The defeated finalist did not automatically come second, but had to contest an additional round with those teams that had previously failed on the overall winner. In the same way there was a round for the bronze medal. Canada , which had sent the best amateur team in the country to Antwerp in the 1919/20 season with the Winnipeg Falcons , won the tournament and claimed its first Olympic and world championship title. Back then, a game consisted of two halves and seven players per team. The dimensions of the ice surface were 56 meters in length and 18 meters in width. A total of 60 players took part in the tournament. The most successful goalscorer of the tournament was Herbert Drury with 14 goals, the most successful shooters of the victorious Canadians were Frank Fredrickson with twelve goals and Haldor "Slim" Halderson with nine goals.
Main round
Seven nations started in the first Olympic ice hockey tournament. The gold medal winner was determined in the knockout system . Due to the odd number of participants, France received a bye and advanced to the semi-finals without a fight.
