James William "Jimmy" Johnson (born July 16, 1943 in Port Arthur , Texas ) is a former American American football coach . Johnson was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). In 2020 Jimmy Johnson will be inducted into the Football Hall of Fame.

Youth / college

Jimmy Johnson grew up in Port Arthur, where he along with Janis Joplin and GW Bailey , the high school attended. After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of Arkansas , where he played from 1962 to 1964 for the Arizona Razorbacks Football on the position of a nose guard . Teammate with the Razorbacks was the later owner of the Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones . In 1964 he remained undefeated with his team in the Southwest Conference and won the Cotton Bowl Classic against the team from the University of Nebraska 10-7. The American sports press then declared the Razorbacks national champions . Johnson did not switch to the professional field after his studies, but immediately took a coaching position.

Coaching career

Assistant coach at college

In 1965 Johnson became an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech University , where he supervised Phil Robertson , among other things . After another year as an assistant at a high school, he served for a year in the same capacity at Wichita State University , and from 1968 and 1969 at Iowa State University . From 1970 to 1972 he worked under Chuck Fairbanks together with Barry Switzer at the University of Oklahoma . There he was responsible for looking after the defensive line . In 1971 and 1972 he won the Sugar Bowl with his team - in 1971 with 40:22 against the team from Auburn University , in 1972 with 14-0 against Pennsylvania State University .

1973 Jimmy Johnson moved back to his old alma mater and looked after the defense of the Razorbacks . In 1975 he won the championship of the Southwest Conference with his team. After Lou Holtz was preferred to him and received the position of head coach at that college, he moved to the University of Pittsburgh for two years . In 1977 he was able to win the 32 Gator Bowl with the Pittsburgh Panthers 34-3 against Clemson University .

Head coach

Oklahoma State University

In 1979, Johnson took his first position as Head Coach at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater , where he looked after the Oklahoma State Cowboys . In 1981 he led his team to the Independence Bowl . There he was defeated by the Texas A&M University with 16:33. 1983 he succeeded again in a bowl game. This time the Bluebonnet Bowl could be won against Baylor University with 24:14.

Michael Irvin

University of Miami

Jimmy Johnson took on his second position as Head Coach at the University of Miami in 1984. He stayed there until 1988 and became one of the university's most successful coaches. In his first coaching year, he lost the Fiesta Bowl to Pennsylvania State University with 39:37 against UCLA . The 52 Sugar Bowl, held on January 1, 1986, was lost to the University of Tennessee 35-7. 1986 was another defeat in the Fiesta Bowl. This time the Miami Hurricanes of Pennsylvania State University had to admit defeat with 10:14. On January 1, 1988 Johnson finally won the Orange Bowl with his team at 20:14 against the University of Oklahoma. The Hurricanes also won all twelve games during the regular season in 1987 and were then declared national college champions.

In 1988 Johnson returned to the Orange Bowl with the Hurricanes . This time his team met the University of Nebraska, which had to admit defeat to the Hurricanes on January 2, 1989 with 3:23 .

During his time as head coach at the University of Miami, Jimmy Johnson trained numerous players who were able to gain a foothold in the NFL after completing their studies. Among them were the wide receiver Michael Irvin , the punter Jeff Feagles or the quarterbacks Bernie Kosar , Vinny Testaverde and Steve Walsh .

Dallas Cowboys

1989 was Jerry Jones , the Dallas Cowboys purchased. The 1988 season was disastrous for the Cowboys. They lost thirteen out of 16 games. Jones fired Tom Landry , the long-time head coach of the Cowboys, and Tex Schramm resigned from the position of general manager . Jones approached his former fellow student Jimmy Johnson and offered him the coaching position. Johnson accepted. Jones and Johnson went according to plan to strengthen the cowboys with young players in the context of the NFL Draft , as well as the commitment of hopeful young NFL professionals. In order to get the necessary draft rights, service providers were handed over. That's how Herschel Walker , running back of the Cowboys, found his way to the Minnesota Vikings . The Vikings gave up five players and six draft rights to the cowboys against the top player. With these and other draft rights, numerous young players were acquired. These included running back Emmitt Smith , quarterback Troy Aikman , defensive tackle Russell Maryland , Chad Hennings and Leon Lett , defensive end Tony Tolbert , offensive tackle Erik Williams , center Mark Stepnoski , safety Darren Woodson and fullback Daryl Johnston . From the Phoenix Cardinals , tight end Jay Novacek joined the Cowboys. Johnson also managed to shape players under contract with the Cowboys such as Michael Irvin, the offensive tackle Mark Tuinei , the defensive end Jim Jeffcoat or the guard Nate Newton into top players.

1989 was not yet a successful year for the cowboys. The Johnson team won only one of 16 games. In the next two years, however, the team grew continuously. In 1991 , after the regular season, there were eleven wins and five defeats. This made it into the play-offs . There the Cowboys failed in the NFC divisional play-off game at the Detroit Lions with 38: 6.

In the following game year, 1992 , Johnson was to win his first Super Bowl . After 13 wins from 16 games during the regular season, the team was again in the play-offs. In the NFC Championship Game, this was followed by a 30:20 win over the San Francisco 49ers supervised by George Seifert . In the following Super Bowl XXVII , the Cowboys competed against the Buffalo Bills and clearly won this game with 52:17.

The following 1993 season began with difficulties. The NFL's best running back in the preseason, Emmitt Smith, had refused to work at the beginning of the season. He wanted to get a better contract through it. The Cowboys lost the first two games of the round and Smith received a new improved contract as a result. Twelve of the next 14 games could now be won with Smith, who again turned out to be the best running back in the league. Johnson won his second Super Bowl at the end of the game round with the team from Dallas . In the NFC Championship Game, Johnson and his cowboys met the 49ers again, who were behind with 38:21 this time. In Super Bowl XXVIII , the cowboys then competed again against the Buffalo Bills, who also went from this Super Bowl as a loser, this time at 13:30. Johnson resigned after winning the Cowboys and was replaced by Barry Switzer. He himself retired to South Florida into private life. However, three years later he was to take on a head coach position again.

Miami Dolphins

After the 1995 season , Don Shula had made his coaching post with the Miami Dolphins available. Johnson was able to achieve an even result with the Dolphins in his first coaching year. In 1997 , the Dolphins team led by quarterback Dan Marino won nine of 16 games in the main round, but failed in the NFC wild card game with 3:17 at the New England Patriots . 1998 followed again the move into the play-offs. Johnson then failed in the AFC divisional play-off game with 14:38 to the Denver Broncos trained by Mike Shanahan . Also in the following season Johnson failed with the team from Miami in the AFC divisional play-off game. This time the Jacksonville Jaguars under head coach Tom Coughlin were able to prevail against the Dolphins with 62: 7 . Johnson resigned from his coaching position a day after this defeat.
