Coat of arms of those of Manteuffel

Manteuffel is the name of an old Pomeranian aristocratic family that later also came into possession and prestige in Brandenburg , Prussia , Silesia , Mecklenburg , Poland and the Baltic States .

They are not related to the tribe or coat of arms of the Baltic zoos of Manteuffel .

history

With Johannes Mandiuel aduocatus de Thanglim (Vogt von Anklam ) the family was first mentioned in a document in 1256. With Henricus Manduvel again in a document on November 14, 1287. The family belonged to the higher nobility of the so-called Schlossgesessenen , whose ancestry or relationship with the Westphalian noble family von Quernheim , who have the same coat of arms, is likely.

The sex formed four tribes early on and spread strongly in Brandenburg, Prussia, Silesia, Mecklenburg and the Baltic States.

The Electoral Saxon Minister Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel from the House of Kerstin , royal Polish and electoral Saxon chamberlain , colonel and envoy in Copenhagen , owner of the Polish indigenous society under the surname Kielpinski, became a baron on March 10, 1709 - and in 1719 Count raised. He died in 1749 without male descendants. His inheritance came among other things to his godfather and adoptive son Christoph Friedrich von Mihledorff (1727-1803) (from the von Moellendorff family with "top coat of arms "), who was made a baron by Elector Friedrich August von Sachsen (as imperial vicar) in 1742 under the name Mihledorff Baron von Manteuffel was raised. The barons of Manteuffel descended from him, whose members played a major role in Prussian and German history, such as his son Hans Carl Erdmann von Manteuffel .

Gottlieb Joseph von Manteuffel made by Broitz , Electoral Palatinate Bavarian chamberlain , lieutenant colonel and landowner on Brandstetten , was on 25 August 1790 by Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria as imperial vicar in the imperial counts charged. He was entered in the Bavarian nobility register in 1810 . With his son Maximilian, however, this count's line ended in 1815.

Otto Theodor von Manteuffel was minister under the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. From 1848 and from 1850 to 1858 Prime Minister and his cousin Edwin von Manteuffel , Prussian field marshal , statesman and from 1879 imperial governor of Alsace and Lorraine .

Family legend

The von Manteuffel family flourished in ancient times, especially in Pomerania. They were very respected and powerful and probably had a different name in the beginning. But because they are said to have been so vicious, cruel and predatory, it was said of them in Pomeranian: id you are Düwel , which means something like: "They are only devils and not people." From this it is said that that she was called Manteuffel. They later adopted the name themselves and spread it to their entire sex.

The noble Pomeranian Manteuffel family

Rogala coat of arms

The family members of the Manteuffel family, who were resident in the Kingdom of Poland and later in West Prussia and entrusted with office and dignity, had, in contrast to other family members, nicknames that originally clarified their origin (possessions, ancestral houses). These surnames were worn for generations, even if the family members were no longer in possession of their namesake goods. The following lines of the Manteuffel belonged as z. B. was the case with the Lehwaldt- Powalski, mostly to the Polish coat of arms cooperative Rogala ( herb szlachecki ). After the Kingdom of Poland was divided by Prussia in 1772, however, the double names disappeared from almost all family members, so that from then on they only called themselves Manteuffel , Kiełpiński or Popielewski .

Kiełpiński

The Manteuffel-Kiełpiński came from Kiełpino (German Kölpin ) in Pomerania and are members of the Kölpin tribe of the Manteuffel family. The first representative of the family, who went by the surname Kiełpiński, was Krzysztof v. Manteuffel-Kielpinski . He testified in 1617 in Człuchów (German Schlochau ) at the derivation of the nobility of a member of the Czankowski family . Selbiger was mentioned in 1650 as the owner of Woltersdorf (today Kiełpin ) in the Schlochau district and as the holder of the church patronage . Another member of the family was Krystjana Anton v. Manteuffel-Kiełpiński from the house of Kerstin ( Karścino in Polish ), direct ancestor of the aforementioned Saxon Minister, Imperial Count and Starosten von Neuhof (Nowy Dwor, Powiat Wałecki ) Ernst Christoph v. Manteuffel-Kiełpiński . Krystjana Anton was listed in the powiat Nakielski in 1649 and was married to Lucia Elisabeth Gułcz (von der Goltz ) ad H. Heinrichsdorf ( Siemczyno ). Andrzej Kazimierz v. Manteuffel-Kiełpiński, Schlochauer Schöffe , was listed as the owner of Wałdowo (German Waldau, District Flatow ) in 1700 and held the office of district judge in the Tuchel district until 1714 . Krzysztof Ignacy Fryderyk v. Manteuffel-Kiełpiński , a cousin of the above imperial count, royal Polish secretary and Benedictine abbot , was appointed Bishop of Poland in 1721. Livonia nominated, which he did not run (sources incorrectly identify him as Bishop of Lievland in 1721). Another noteworthy member of this line was Maciej Joachim v. Manteuffel-Kiełpiński, Herr auf Olszanowo (German Elsenau ) and Sypniewo (German Wilckenwalde ), Royal Polish Master , Truchsess von Terebowlja ( Terebowlja , Polish Trembowla ) and until 1724 salt works manager of the salt works in Bydgoszcz (German Bromberg ). In addition to the district of Schlochau, descendants of this line were mainly wealthy in today's województwo kujawsko-pomorskie (German Voivodeship Kujawien-Pomeranian ). Members of this line can sometimes be found as Kielpinski-Manteuffel .

Popielewski

Coat of arms (Polish: herb) Manteuffel II

The Manteuffel-Popielewski came from Popielewo (German (large) Poplow ) in the Starostei Draheim and are members of the Poplow tribe of the Manteuffel family . Since the Middle Ages, Pomerania, Poland and Brandenburg have made property claims on the controversial Draheim border area. There is evidence that the Manteuffel have lived in Popielewo since 1430 . In addition, the line was enfeoffed with Kołacz (German Collatz ), Buślary (German Buslar ), Palace and City Połczyn-Zdrój (German Pölzin ) and Biernów (German Quisbernow ). In 1512 a Jana Popielewskiego is mentioned in a document in connection with Mirosławice (German Lindenhof , Strelno municipality ). In 1554 a Hendryk v. Manteuffel-Popielewski listed on Popielewo . Heinrich was the Electorate Palatinate Councilor and Oberhofmarschall and, in addition to Popielewo, pea food on Kołacz , Jezierzyce (German Jerseritz ) and ½ share of Gąsków (German Ganzkow ). Ernst and Franciszek-Henryk Manteuffel-Popielewski were listed as members of the Szlachta in 1669 and together they built the church in Popielewo in 1680 . The same Bogusław quarreled with the Starostei Draheim over land in 1668 . The Manteuffel considered the Polish courts to have jurisdiction in border disputes despite the Bydgoszcz Treaty of 1657 . Franciszek-Henryk acquired goods Debrzno-Wieś (German Dobrin ), Sitno (German Hütten ) and Bługowo (German Wehlehof , Linde municipality ) in the Kingdom of Poland . In 1697 Gerard v. Manteufel-Popielewski mentioned as the owner of Brusno (German Brutzen ) and ½ Popielewo . In 1775 Fryderyk-Jerzy-Krystjan v. Manteuffel-Popielewski , royal Polish captain, his shares from Popielew to the royal Prussian lieutenant general Heinrich von Manteuffel .
