David O'Brien Martin

David O'Brien Martin (born April 26, 1944 in St. Lawrence County , New York , †  November 20, 2012 in Hedgesville , West Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 1993 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

David Martin attended public schools in Colton and Canton . In 1962 he graduated from Hugh C. Williams High School in Canton. He then studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana until 1966 . From 1966 to 1970 he was a flight officer with the rank of captain in the United States Marine Corps . After studying law at Albany Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1974, he began working in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1973 to 1975 he was a member of the St. Lawrence County District Council; In 1976 and 1980 he was a member of the New York State Assembly .

In the 1980 congressional elections , Martin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 30th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Robert C. McEwen on January 3, 1981 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . Since 1983 he represented there as the successor to Benjamin A. Gilman the 26th district of his state.

In 1992, Martin renounced another congressional candidacy. In 1993 and 1994 he was a professor at the Naval War College in Newport ( Rhode Iceland ). He then worked as a private lawyer and businessman. He died of cancer on November 20, 2012 in Hedgesville.
