The 25th Eurovision Song Contest took place on April 19, 1980 in The Hague after the IBA of last year's winner Israel was unable to host the event for the second time in a row for financial reasons. Since the jumping in Dutch NOS set the date of the event on April 19, which coincided with the Israeli memorial day Yom HaZikaron in 1980 , Israel also decided not to participate. This was the last year so far that the country of the previous year's winner was not the host country.
venue
According to the rules, the Israeli broadcaster IBA had the right to hold the competition again after the victory in Jerusalem last year. For financial reasons, the IBA eventually returned this right to the EBU . It initially offered it to second-placed Spain, where RTVE planned to host it in Torremolinos , which, however, also failed. The BBC , which has so far hosted the event every time the previous year's winner did not want or could not, refused. After months of negotiations, including a rejection, the Dutch broadcaster NOS finally agreed to host the 1980 ESC. At the end of November 1979, The Hague was announced as the venue. Due to the enormous time pressure, the venues and large parts of the stage were reused from 1976 when the Netherlands last hosted the ESC.
particularities
The winner was Irishman Johnny Logan with What's Another Year? in front of the theater by Katja Ebstein from Germany. But Switzerland was also satisfied with the result, Paola and Cinéma took 4th place, You are music by Blue Danube from Austria took 8th place.
In addition, Morocco took part for the first and only time, but without success. Bitakat picked up by Samira Bensaïd , who was penultimate, was also the only Arabic-language song in the history of the ESC for a long time. It was not until the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 that Israel took part with a title that, in addition to an English and Hebrew part, also had an Arabic-speaking part. In return, the representative of Luxembourg, Papa pingouin from Sophie & Magaly, achieved a high cult status. The song by Ralph Siegel and Bernd Opinion , who also wrote the German contribution, came in 9th.
Attendees
In 1980 Morocco took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first and only time. Turkey returned, but Monaco and Israel decided not to participate, so that, as in the previous year, 19 countries took part in the competition.
The following performers returned to the competition and all made the top 5:
country | Interpreter | Previous year of participation |
---|---|---|
Germany | Katja Ebstein | 1970 , 1971 |
Netherlands | Maggie MacNeal | 1974 (as part of Mouth & MacNeal ) |
Switzerland | Paola | 1969 |
Voting procedure
In each country there was an eleven-member jury, which initially determined the ten best songs internally. Then the individual juries awarded 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 points and 1 point to these ten best songs. When the points were announced, there was an innovation: From this year onwards, the points awarded by a country were read out in ascending order of value of the points themselves (1, 2, 3, ... 12), while in previous years the ratings were announced according to the starting order (1979 for example: Italy 8 points, Ireland 5 points ... )
