Kardemir Karabükspor (also Kardemir Demir Çelik Karabükspor) is a Turkish sports club from the Karabük province of the same name , whose only professional club it is. It was founded in 1969 and plays its games in the 15,000-seat Necmettin-Şeyhoğlu Stadium . Since 2018 the club has been playing in the TFF 1st Lig , the second highest Turkish division. The club played a total of nine seasons in the Süper Lig in the 1990s and 2010s and is 37th in their all-time table .

founding

The association was founded in 1969 by the union of Karabük Gençlikspor and Demir Çelik Spor .

Karabükspor in the 1st Lig

Already in the 1993/94 season Kardemir Karabükspor played in the top Turkish league, but rose again in the first year after they had conceded 2-1 against Zeytinburnuspor in stoppage time. In 1997, the team made it to the Süper Lig again, but rose after two years as bottom of the table again.

System-related relegation to the TFF 2nd league and third division years (2001-2008)

Since Turkish professional football was to undergo fundamental changes in the 2001/02 season, preparations for this change were made in the 2000/01 season. So far, professional football in Turkey has consisted of three leagues: the top division, the single-lane Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the second-rate five-lane and two-stage Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi and the third-rate, eight -lane Türkiye 3. Futbol Ligi . For the 2001/02 season, professional football was expanded to four professional leagues. While the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi remained unchanged, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi was now in the second highest division, the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Aategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category A of Turkey ), and the third highest division , the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi Bategorisi (to German: 2. Football League Category B of Turkey ), divided. The subordinate Türkiye 3rd Futbol Ligi was henceforth the fourth highest division, the TFF 3rd Lig . Those teams, which only occupied a middle place in the table in the second division season 2000/01 , were assigned to the newly created third-highest Turkish division, the 2. Lig, for the coming season. Karabükspor, which had finished the league in 5th place in the table, had to relegate to the 2nd Lig due to the system.

Relegated to the third division, the team did not succeed in direct promotion to the second division in the 2001/02 season , but instead qualified for the play-off phase of the league. In this, the third and last climber was played out by knockout system . The first leg of the play-offs, the quarter-finals, met the team on Karşıyaka SK and was eliminated from this club. In the following season , the club had no chance in the promotion battle and even fought against relegation towards the end of the season. After successful relegation in the 2002/03 season, the team played for a long time for promotion in the 2003/04 season . At the end of the season, the championship and thus the promotion was awarded to Sarıyer SK and the season ended as runner-up in the 3rd division. After the 2004/05 season was completed with a middle place in the table, the 2005/06 season returned to participation in the play-off phase of the league. Here the team failed in the first round, the round of 16, to Eskişehirspor . The play-off phase was also reached in the next season, but again in the first round, this time against Adana Demirspor , the last chance of promotion was wasted.

In the 2007/08 season , under the leadership of head coach Mustafa Çapanoğlu, the hoped-for promotion to the TFF 1. Lig . The team fought with the two teams Adanaspor and Adana Demirspor until the last matchday for the championship lead. Before the last matchday, Karabükspor was behind these two teams in 3rd place in the table. On the last day of the match, however, the team defeated Erzurumspor 7-0, overtaking Demirspor and becoming runner-up of the season behind Adanaspor. With this placement, the team rose through the game mode valid at the time.

TFF 1st league and sovereign second division champion (2008-2010)

Despite promotion to the TFF 1st Lig Karabükspor did not extend his contract with Mustafa Çapanoğlu and instead hired Hüsnü Özkara as a coach. Under this coach, the newcomer shows a mixed season and finished the league in 7th place in the table. In summer 2009, the club replaced Özkara with Yücel İldiz . Under this coach Karabükspor took over the table lead on the 16th match day of the 2009/10 season and finished the first half of the season as autumn champions. In the second half of the season the team got off to a very successful start and in the 23rd week of the match, they were 10 points ahead of their closest rival Bucaspor . This lead was confidently maintained or expanded over the further course of the season. After the 31st matchday, three matchdays before the end of the season, Karabükspor secured the second division championship and thus after twelve years the return to the Süper Lig. The team took six points from the remaining three games and ended the season with a 13-point advantage as a master. Striker duo Yasin Avcı and Emmanuel Emenike formed the league's most successful striker with 34 goals, while Avcı was also top scorer with 18 league goals.

Return to the Süper Lig and establishment (2010–2012)

In 2010 Karabükspor managed to return to the top division through the second division championship after 14 years of abstinence. After the promotion, the team advanced to one of the surprise teams of the 2010/11 first division season . So the club was always in the top half of the table in the first half of the table and surprisingly ended it in 6th place in the table. In addition to the successful style of play, the modern collective football played by Karabükspor was praised by the specialist press and the team was referred to as Barça des Nordes (Turkish: Kuzey'in Barça'sı ) based on the then very successful FC Barcelona . Besides the youngster of the team, the Nigerian Emmanuel Emenike , the achievements of Florin Cernat , Birol Hikmet and Ahmet Cebe were also highlighted. In the second half of the season Karabükspor showed a similar performance and finished the league in 9th place in the table. This repeated the best first division placement that was valid to date.

After this season, Emmanuel Emenike became one of the most sought-after players of the 2011 summer transfer period within Turkish football. Finally, Emenike moved to reigning Turkish champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul for a transfer fee of 9 million euros , making it the most expensive sale in Karabükspor's club history. The 2011/2012 season began less positively for the club. After 10 games you were in 16th place in the table, and so you parted with the coach and signed Bülent Korkmaz , who had also coached the Turkish record champions. At first, however, no improvement could be determined, as the club only got 4 points in the next 7 games and was therefore still in 16th place. On the 18th matchday they even fell to 17th place, but rose again to 16th place after the next game. In match days 19, 20, 21, 22 the club got a total of 6 points, which were followed by a series of unbeaten games. From the next 6 games they got a sensational 16 out of a possible 18 points, and Karabükspor was already in 14th place in the table. Only on the 29th matchday did the club Bursaspor admit defeat 3-0. In the last 5 games they only lost one game and got a total of 10 points. The season ended in 12th place in the table, and with a total of 32 points in the second half of the season they were the third best team in the second half of the season after Galatasaray Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul. In the first half of the 2012/2013 season, a sensational 3-1 away win against leaders Galatasaray was achieved on matchday 12. In addition, Karabükspor managed to reach the semi-finals in the Turkish Cup in the 2011/2012 season, but then they were eliminated against the eventual cup winner Fenerbahçe Istanbul. The semi-finals are still the greatest competition success in the club's history. On May 9, 2012, immediately after the end of the season, the club surprisingly parted ways with coach Bülent Korkmaz.

Conqueror of favorites despite almost relegation (2012-2013)

Michael Skibbe was signed as Korkmaz's successor for the 2012/13 season , but he was released in November 2012. Skibbe replaced the club on November 5, 2012 by Mesut Bakkal . This quickly led Karabükspor to the top half of the table and ensured that the specialist press became aware of Karabükspor with surprise wins against Galatasaray Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Trabzonspor . Towards the end of the season, the team was unable to repeat its performance. As a result, you slide into the relegation zone again. Following these developments, Bakkal was dismissed from the club's management after the 2-0 home defeat on the 32nd matchday against Gaziantepspor . The club management replaced Bakkal on an interim basis with his assistant coach Suat Sarıcan . Since Karabükspor with an away game against Sivasspor and the home game against Fenerbahçe seemed to have the most difficult remaining program of the relegation-threatened clubs, it was rated by the specialist press as a certain relegation. After the game against Sivasspor was lost 2-1 and on the last day of the match the Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor and Akhisar Belediyespor had the seemingly easier opponents, the forecast of a relegation of Karabükspor was condensed. On the last day of the match, the team defeated Fenerbahçe 3-2 in a thrilling game and secured themselves relegation on their own.

Most successful first division season and first participation in the Europa League (2013–2014)

After the close relegation of the 2012/13 season, Karabükspor signed Tolunay Kafkas, a young and promising coach, for the 2013/14 season . With this coach, the team sat down for a large part of the season in the upper third of the table or the upper half of the table and played for a Europa League place until the last game days . In the end, the team missed the Europe League participation, but with 7th place in the table, the best first division placement in the club's history was achieved.

For the Europa League qualified fourth Trabzonspor , the table fifth Sivasspor and the cup finalist Eskişehirspor instead . As UEFA banned the last two clubs from participating in the upcoming Europe League participation in the summer of 2014 due to their involvement in the Fenerbahçe Istanbul manipulation scandal and the appeal of both clubs at the International Court of Sport (CAS) had not shown any change in judgment, they came in the final table subsequent teams like Karabükspor as a substitute in question.

The table sixth, Kasımpaşa Istanbul , was also denied participation in the Europe League because the club did not meet UEFA's financial fair play criteria . Karabükspor was determined to be seventh in the table and Bursaspor as eighth as the other Turkish Europe League participants. Karabükspor faced Norwegian representatives Rosenborg Trondheim in the third qualifying round . After the first game in front of a home crowd ended 0-0, Kafkas' team fought 1-1 away and survived the first round in his first participation in a European cup competition. In the next round, the play-offs, the team met French representatives AS Saint-Étienne . After the first leg was won 1-0, Kardemir lost 0-1 in the second leg in France, whereupon the decision to move into the group stage had to be brought about on penalties. This decided Saint-Etienne 4-3 for themselves, which Karabükspor missed the group stage.

Unsuccessful start to the season and relegation to the 1st Lig (2014-2015)

After the unfortunate elimination from the Europa League , the club got off to an unexpectedly bad start in the 2014/15 first division and slipped to a relegation zone on the second day of the match. By the end of the first half of the season, the club was able to work its way up to a non-relegation place several times, but kept falling back to a relegation place and ended the first half of the season with 15th place in the table on the last non-relegation place. Reasons for this were, in addition to poor performance, the injury-related loss of service providers. Head coach Tolunay Kafkas announced his resignation on the last match day of the season, the home encounter on January 25, 2015 against direct relegation competitor Kayseri Erciyesspor . This resignation was not accepted by the club's management and Kafkas was persuaded to continue his office. After the club management's commitment to the coach did not improve the team's performance either, Kafkas announced his resignation on February 22, 2015. This time his resignation was accepted. As Kafka's successor, the club signed the experienced coach Yılmaz Vural in the relegation battle . After this coach did not achieve the hoped-for upward trend, the club was relegated after the 32nd matchday.

Direct promotion back to the Süper Lig

After relegation to the TFF 1. Lig, the club signed Hüseyin Kalpar, an experienced second division coach. Under this coach, the team started well in the league and always occupied places in the top quarter of the table. For a long time there has been a restless mood in the association's board, which has been accompanied by several resignations and new elections. In September 2015, Hikmet Feridun Tankut was re-elected as the president under whom the club returned to the Süper Lig in 2010. Shortly after this re-election, the coach Kalpar announced his resignation and was replaced a little later by Elvir Baljić . Under this coach, the team temporarily took the lead, but slipped back to 6th place in the table during the winter break and lost contact with the top of the table. As a result, Baljić also resigned from his office.

During the winter break , the club's management signed Yücel İldiz, the coach with whom the club made it to the Süper Lig in the summer of 2010. Under the reunited successful team Tankut-İldiz, the team took over the championship lead on the first day of the second half of the season, but gave it to Adanaspor after three matchdays . After Adanaspor gradually separated from his pursuers, Karabükspor delivered a head-to-head race with Alanyaspor for the runner-up and thus the last direct promotion place. Although Karabükspor occupied 2nd place in the table for a long time, but lost it to Alanyaspor on matchday 29. After a brief change of place in the table, Karabükspor stayed on Alanyaspor's heels, only prevailed against Alanyaspor on the last match day and thus achieved direct promotion to the Süper Lig as runner-up.
