history
Archaeological finds from the Younger Stone Age tell of a settlement at the site of the village. The first documentary mention took place in 1302. Neuerkirch on the other side of the Külzbach belonged for a long time to the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken , Neuerkirch on this side of the Külzbach belonged to Pfalz-Simmern and Electoral Palatinate . With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine by French revolutionary troops in 1794 , Neuerkirch became French, in 1815 Neuerkirch was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Until 1938 Neuerkirch consisted of two separate communities on this side and on the other side of the Külzbach. After the First World War temporarily occupied by the French again, the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946.
The local community has been running the Museum of Cultural History since June 1989. The core of the museum goes back to the collection of the Hunsrück Museum in Simmern. After a three-year preparatory phase, it was opened and made accessible to the population. The aim of the museum is to document farm tools and machines, old craft trades and their products, as well as the rural living culture of bygone times. It experienced a considerable expansion through the willingness of the Hunsrück population to make objects from the historical village culture available to the museum for exhibition purposes. The residential and farm buildings in which the museum is housed belong to the local community of Neuerkirch.
politics
Municipal council
The municipal council in Neuerkirch consists of six council members, who were elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote, and the honorary local mayor as chairman.
mayor
Local mayor is Volker Wichter. In the local elections on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in his office with 92.35% of the votes.
coat of arms
In 1979 the municipal council decided to introduce a municipal coat of arms. The front part of the shield refers to the former affiliation of Neuerkirch on the other side of the Duchy of Zweibrücken (Amt Kastellaun). The wave bar is a reference to the Külzbach, which divides Neuerkirch into two districts. The church reads the place name, hammer and mallet refer to the silver smelting at the boundary of the district.
Economy and Infrastructure
The ore, zinc, iron and silver mining as well as the processing of mineral resources shaped the economy in Neuerkirch until the 19th century, with mining and smelting taking place in the district of the neighboring community of Alterkülz . Dumps from the Eid mine still exist today. All that remains are hints in the local coat of arms and a few unique mining specimens in the museum.
Neuerkirch is on the route of the former Hunsrück Railway that connected Simmern and Boppard. The village was able to use the Külz train station, which lies directly on the border with Külz, and which was removed after the line was closed. Today the Schinderhannes cycle path , which is heavily used by tourists, runs on the converted railway line.
The formerly dominant agriculture has almost completely disappeared, so that only one full-time farm and several part-time farms are left in this area.
In addition, a carpentry and crane company, a metal construction company, a construction company, a farmer's kitchen, a carpenter's shop, a textile house, two insurance agencies and a veterinary practice offer jobs in the village. The other workers commute to workplaces outside of Neuerkirch.
The project development company juwi operates since 2011 the wind farm Neuerkirch with eight wind turbines of the type Enercon E-82 on the north-eastern ridge of Neuerkich. Another system of the type Repower 3.2M114 with an output of 3.14 MW has been applied for.
Culture and sights
The cultural life is shaped by three associations. On the 2nd Sunday in July, the traditional artisan and farmers' market takes place in the historic town center. In the museum and on the museum forecourt, the sponsoring association, together with partner organizations, ensures a varied cultural program, including a classic car show and an open-air cinema.
