The UK Championship is a professional snooker tournament that is one of the tournaments on the Main Tour . It is one of the three triple crown events . The record winner with seven tournament victories is Ronnie O'Sullivan .

history

The tournament was first held as the United Kingdom Snooker Championship in 1977. At that time, only British players were eligible (the first winner, Irish Patsy Fagan , was an exception - he was also in possession of a British passport).

The first edition was held at Tower Circus in Blackpool . In 1978 the tournament was first in the Guildhall of Preston relocated to where it should remain until the 1997th In 1984 the UK Championship was opened to all players and was given the rank of a ranked tournament.

The tournament moved frequently from 1998 onwards. First I went to the International Center in Bournemouth and later to the Barbican Center in York . From 2007 to 2010 the UK Championship took place temporarily at the Telford International Center in Telford (like the Grand Prix earlier ). Since 2011 it has taken place again in York's Barbican Center .

There were even more changes among the sponsors. Over the years, the following companies have been main sponsors: Super Chrystalate , Coral , Tennants , Stormseal , Royal Liver Assurance , Liverpool Victoria , Powerhouse , Travis Perkins , Maplin Electronics , Pukka Pies , 12BET.com , williamhill.com and, since 2015, Betway .

So far, 16 maximum breaks have been played in the UK Championship . Willie Thorne was the first player to hit a high break in 1987. This was followed by Peter Ebdon (1992), Stephen Hendry (1995 and 1999), Nick Dyson (qualifying 2000), David Gray (2004), Ding Junhui (2008), Andy Hicks and Jack Lisowski (both qualifying in 2012), John Higgins (2012), Mark Selby (2013), Ronnie O'Sullivan (2007 and 2014), Neil Robertson (2015), Mark Allen (2016) and Barry Hawkins (2019).

In addition, Jamie Burnett achieved a so-called 16 Reds clearance in 2004 . With a free ball at the beginning of the frame, he managed a break of 148 points, which is also the highest break in an official professional tournament to date.
