UEFA Champions League 1999/2000

The 2000/01 UEFA Champions League was the 9th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 46th overall.

A record number of 72 teams from 48 national associations took part in the competition, with the countries that were allowed to send four teams in places 1-3 of the UEFA five-year ranking, three teams in places 4-6 and two teams in places 7-15. With NK Brotnjo Čitluk, a representative from Bosnia and Herzegovina was at the start for the first time .

The final took place on May 23, 2001 in the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan and was won by FC Bayern Munich against FC Valencia after a 1-1 draw after extra time with 5-4 on penalties. The final was a novelty in two respects: on the one hand, for the first time in the history of the competition, the losing teams of the two previous years faced each other. On the other hand, for the first time all goals in the game were scored by penalties.

mode

Two teams from countries ranked 1-3 in the UEFA five-year ranking (Germany, Italy and Spain) qualified for the first group stage and two started in the third qualifying round, with the defending champions Real Madrid not in the qualifying round, but started right away in the group stage. Two teams from England, France and the Netherlands (places 4-6) were also seeded for the group stage and one team each started in the third qualifying round. One team each from Greece, Portugal and Russia (places 7–9) were selected for the group stage and one team each started in the third qualifying round. Denmark, Croatia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Turkey and the Ukraine (places 10-15) each sent one team to the 2nd and one team each to the 3rd qualifying round.

In the first group stage, 8 groups of 4 teams were played. The first and second in each group qualified for the second group stage. The third-placed finishers in each group were allowed to continue playing in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup . In the second group phase, 4 groups of 4 teams were played. Here the first and second in each group qualified for the quarter-finals. In the case of a tie, the following applies in the group phases:

  1. Points from the direct games.
  2. Goals scored in direct matches.
  3. Away goals in direct games
  4. Goal difference from all group matches.
