Meilhan ( Gascon : Melhan) is a French municipality with 80 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Gers in the region Occitania (2015 Midi-Pyrénées ); it belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande and the municipal association Val de Gers . The residents call themselves Meilhanais / Meilhanaises .
geography
Meilhan is located around 25 kilometers northwest of Mirande and 26 kilometers southeast of Auch in the south of the Gers department. The community consists of hamlets, numerous scattered settlements and individual farmsteads. The river Lauze crosses the municipality in a northerly direction and in parts forms the eastern municipal boundary.
Neighboring communities are Betcave-Aguin in the north and northeast, Villefranche in the east, Gaujan in the southeast, Monties in the south, Sère in the south and southwest and Bellegarde in the west.
history
The community was founded in the 13th century by Hugues de Cadens as Betouret / Bitornet . In the Middle Ages, the community was within the Kastlanei Villefranche of the County of Astarac in the historic Gascon region and shared its fate. Meilhan belonged to the District of L'Isle Jourdain from 1793 to 1801. From 1801 to 1926 the community was assigned to the Lombez arrondissement. Then Meilhan belonged to the arrondissement Auch from 1926 to 2015. It has been in the Mirande arrondissement since 2015. Meilhan belonged to the canton of Lombez from 1801 to 2015 . On July 7, 1944, the community was the scene of an act of revenge by the German Wehrmacht. This attacked the Maquis with more than 1000 soldiers. 76 of the 93 resistance fighters were killed. The memorial is located in the municipality of Villefranche.
