Preliminary round, quarter-finals, semi-finals
3rd place / final
mode
Twelve teams each took part in the tournament for women and men. They initially played in two preliminary round groups with six teams each. There were three points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, two points for a 3-2 win, one point for a 3-2 defeat and a 1-3 or 0-3 defeat no point. The number of victories was decisive for placing in the group. In the event of equality, the number of points decided first, then the rate quotient (division method) and finally the ball point quotient (division method). The four best teams from each group qualified for the quarter-finals. From the quarter-finals on, the simple knockout system continued until the final.
The groups were divided according to the "serpentine system", which is based on the positions in the volleyball world rankings . The groups were announced on May 23rd (women) and June 6th (men).
Because of the tight schedule, there were no technical time outs at this Olympic tournament. As in a number of other international competitions in previous years, the video challenge was used as technical support, with which coaches could have the referee's decision checked.
