The Olympic Stadium in Athens
The 2006/07 UEFA Champions League was the 15th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 52nd overall. 73 clubs from 49 national associations took part in the competition this year. The competition began with the first qualifying round on July 11, 2006 and ended with the final in the Olympic Stadium in Athens on May 23, 2007. The winner was AC Milan, who initially came second in Serie A , but after manipulation was discovered third place was downgraded and thus had to qualify for the group stage.

There were no changes to the game mode compared to the previous season. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

First qualifying round
The first leg took place on 11/12. July, the second legs on 18./19. July 2006.
Second qualifying round
The first legs took place on 25/26. July, the second legs on 1/2. August 2006.
Third qualifying round
The winners qualified for the group stage and the losers were allowed to continue playing in the first round of the 2006/07 UEFA Cup .
The first legs took place on 8/9. August, the second leg on 22./23. August 2006.

2 was downgraded and had to qualify
3 Maccabi Haifa's home game was played in Kiev , as UEFA did not allow international matches in Israel at the time.
Group stage
32 teams took part in the group stage and played in 8 groups (A to H) of 4 teams each. The group stage draw took place on August 24, 2006. The champions from the top 10 national associations and the runners-up from the countries in 1st to 6th place in the UEFA five-year ranking were drawn from the 16 winners of the third qualifying round. The first and second-placed clubs from each group made it to the round of 16, while the third-placed team continued to play in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup . The last in the group was eliminated from the European competitions.
