Le Châtelard in the Bauges massif

Le Châtelard is a French municipality with 670 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Le Châtelard is located at 757  m , about 21 kilometers northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 24 kilometers south of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, in the center of the Bauges massif , at a narrow point in the Chéran valley, marked by a rock , at the northern foot of the Grand Colombier .

The area of the 18.00 km² municipal area includes a heavily reliefed section of the Bauges massif. The main features are the north-south-oriented terrain structures, which are interrupted at Le Châtelard by the river Chéran, which runs in a south-east-north-west direction. To the west of the village the river enters a basin into which the Ruisseau d'Aillon valley flows from the south . In the far west, the community area extends to the foothills of Mont Margeriaz (up to 1311  m ). South of Le Châtelard, the area extends to the limestone peaks of the Dent de Rossanaz ( 1891  m ) and, at 1920  m , on the slope of the Grand Colombier, it is the highest point in the municipality. To the north of the Chéran, the parallel rugged ridges of Mont Chabert ( 1475  m ) and Mont Julioz ( 1673  m ) form an impressive backdrop. The municipality is located within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ), where the park administration is located.

In addition to the actual town center, Le Châtelard also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Les Granges ( 740  m ) on a plateau at the foot of Mont Chabert
  • Villaret Rouge ( 700  m ) above the mouth of the Ruisseau d'Aillon in the Chéran
  • Attilly ( 710  m ) above the mouth of the Ruisseau d'Aillon in the Chéran
  • Montlardier ( 760  m ) at the north foot of the Grand Colombier
  • La Lavanche ( 800  m ) in the Ruisseau d'Aillon valley

Neighboring municipalities of Le Châtelard are La Motte-en-Bauges and Bellecombe-en-Bauges in the north, Doucy-en-Bauges in the east, La Compôte and Aillon-le-Vieux in the south and Lescheraines in the west.

history

Le Châtelard was first mentioned in a document in 1095 under the name Castellarium . Later the names Castellard (1216) and Castellania Castellarii (1356) appeared. The place name is derived from the vulgar Latin word castellarium , which means something like a place guarded by a fort . Since the Middle Ages Le Châtelard center was castellany Boges which large parts of the inner Bauges massif included. After several changes of ownership, it was made a marquisate in 1619 and finally came into direct possession of the Counts of Savoy in the middle of the 17th century . Nothing is left of the castle that was on the rock ledge near the village. The place was granted certain freedoms in 1301 and was a customs post on the Talenge des Chéran.

From 1793 to 2015, the municipality was the main town (French:  chef-lieu ) of the canton of Le Châtelard .

Attractions

The parish church of Le Châtelard dates from the 19th century. In the town center, old rows of houses from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved in the typical Savoyard architectural style. The hamlet of Montlardier also has characteristic farmhouses.

Economy and Infrastructure

The hydropower of the Chéran was formerly used to operate mills. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Alby-sur-Chéran through the Bauges massif to Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny . Other road connections exist with Aillon-le-Vieux and La Motte-en-Bauges. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 25 km away.
