Saint-Ours is a French municipality with 677 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Aix-les-Bains-1 in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .
geography
Saint-Ours is located at 570 m , about 22 kilometers north of the prefecture of Chambéry and 19 kilometers southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the southern Albanais , in the foothills of the Alps west of the Bauges massif , in a promising location on a slope sloping to the south-west above the valley of the Sierre.
The area of the 4.59 km² municipal area includes a section of the Albanais. The area lies in a molasse hill country at the foot of the Bauges massif. It is drained by the Sierre and its side streams to the west to the Lac du Bourget . From the valley of the Sierre the municipal area extends northwards to the plateau of La Forêt and over the slope of Saint-Ours to the level of Chainaz. Here, at 690 m, the highest point of Saint-Ours is reached. The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).
In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Ours also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Bassa ( 500 m ) in a hollow at the foot of the Montagne de Bange and location of the municipal office ( Mairie )
- La Forêt ( 483 m ) at the height between the Albanais valley and the Sierre valley
- L'Écluse ( 520 m ) on the slope below the village
- Vingerel ( 550 m ) on the western slope of Chainaz
Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Ours are Chainaz-les-Frasses in the north, Cusy in the east, Saint-Offenge in the south and Entrelacs in the west.
history
The municipality of Saint-Ours was already settled during Roman times, which has been proven by numerous traces from this time. The place name, first mentioned around 1250, goes back to St. Ursus von Solothurn . In the Middle Ages, Saint-Ours was part of the Cusy domain. From 1730, the village became known as the location of a factory that produced luxury tableware.

With 677 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Ours is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the 20th century, a significant increase in population has been recorded since the early 1980s thanks to the attractive residential area. The local residents of Saint-Ours are called Saint-Oursien (ne) s in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
To this day, Saint-Ours is an agricultural village that is mainly focused on milk production . In addition, various local small businesses have recently emerged. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Chambéry and Annecy area .
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the D911 departmental road from Grésy-sur-Aix to Cusy. Further road connections exist with Chainaz-les-Frasses, Épersy and Saint-Offenge-Dessous . The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 10 km away.
