Sainte-Reine is a French municipality with 159 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Sainte-Reine is located at 830  m , about 18 kilometers east-northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 32 kilometers south of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, in the Bauges massif , in the broad valley of the Ruisseau des Grands Prés at the western foot of the Dent d'Arclusaz .

The area of ​​the 14.62 km² municipal area includes a heavily reliefed section of the Bauges massif. The central part is occupied by a wide valley basin (about 1 km wide, flat valley floor), which is drained by the Ruisseau des Grands Prés to the north to the Chéran . To the south, the municipality extends almost to the top of the Col du Frêne pass , which connects to the Isèretal . The valley is flanked in the west by Mont Pelat ( 1543  m ) and Mont Chardonnet ( 1405  m ), in the east by the striking rock faces of the Dent d'Arclusaz, on which the highest point of Sainte-Reine is reached at 2040  m . The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

In addition to the hamlet with the church, Sainte-Reine also includes the settlements:

history

The parish of Sainte-Reine is first mentioned in 1198 as Ecclesia Sancte Radegonde and is named after St. Radegundis . Later documents write the place Sainte-Reyne and Latinize Sancta Regina . He belonged to the Bauges rule until the end of the Ancien Régime .

Attractions

The village church of Sainte-Reine was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. Next to it are the rectory, the school and the parish hall. In Épernay there is a chapel and a former manor house.

With 159 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Sainte-Reine is one of the smallest communities in the Savoie department. After the population fell sharply in the first half of the 20th century, it has remained fairly constant in recent years. The local residents of Sainte-Reine are called Routhenain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Sainte-Reine was a village dominated by agriculture , especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Alby-sur-Chéran through the Bauges massif and over the Col du Frêne to Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny. The closest connection to the A43 motorway is around 15 km away.
