Tadej Pogačar (born September 21, 1998 in Komenda ) is a Slovenian cyclist . He was the overall winner of the Tour de France 2020 and 2021 .
Athletic career
In 2016 Tadej Pogačar had his first international successes in the junior sector when he won the Giro della Lunigiana and a stage of the International Junior Peace Race . He also finished third in the road race at the European Junior Championships and was Slovenian junior champion in the individual time trial . In the following year he won the junior class of the Tour of Slovenia and the Carpathian Couriers Race . In 2018 he won the Giro della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia , the Tour de l'Avenir and the Grand Prix Priessnitz spa as well as again the junior competition of the Tour of Slovenia , and he came third in the overall classification of the Istrian Spring Trophy . At the UCI Road World Championships , he finished seventh in the U23 road race.
For 2019 Pogačar received a contract with UCI WorldTeam UAE Team Emirates . In the spring he was able to record his first victories, such as winning the overall ranking of the Algarve Tour . In May 2019, he won the California Tour . At the age of 20, he was the youngest winner of a World Tour race and thus also the California Tour. Since he was not yet 21 years old and was therefore not yet allowed to drink alcohol in the USA , he did not receive a bottle of champagne - as usual - but a cuddly bear at the award ceremony .
In September he started as the youngest driver on his first " Grand Tour ", the Vuelta a España 2019 . He won the mountain finishes of the 9th and 13th stage and was thus the leader of the junior class in the meantime . On the 18th stage, Miguel Ángel López took the lead in this classification from him. With a victorious solo attack over almost 40 kilometers on the 20th stage, Pogačar achieved his third day's success at the Vuelta and thereby regained third overall position of the tour as well as the lead in the junior ranking.
At the Tour de France 2020 , Pogačar won the 9th and 15th stages as well as the individual time trial on the 20th stage . With the victory in this stage, a mountain time trial, he also took the lead in the overall standings. Before the stage he was 57 seconds behind Primož Roglič , who had been the overall leader until then , but needed almost two minutes less than Roglič for the time trial. At this event, he won not only the overall but also the mountain and junior competitions. He is the second youngest winner of the Tour de France after Henri Cornet , who was 19 years old when he won in 1904 .
In the sprint of a top group of five, Pogačar Liège – Bastogne – Liège won in 2021 and thus his first monument to cycling .
