In the first half of the 19th century the population was consistently around 1000 people. As a result of the phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants fell to around 500 in the 1920s. The significant increase in population in recent decades is due to the proximity to Toulouse and comparatively low rental and property prices.

economy

The place lived for centuries from agriculture, whereby in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period the cultivation of woad ( pastel ) played a dominant role. The steady increase in the population of Villenouvelle is an indicator of the positive economic development of the region. Due to the proximity to the city of Toulouse and comparatively low land prices, a new building district has emerged in recent decades.

history

The Roman road Via Aquitania led through the area of today's municipality. In the 11th and 12th centuries there was a - now almost deserted - place with an unknown name about 800 meters further northeast in the vicinity of a priory. 'Villenouvelle', on the other hand, was founded in 1270 by Alfons of Poitiers (1220–1271) on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela ( Via Tolosana ) as a bastide against the potential resurgence of the Albigensian movement (cf. the neighboring towns of Avignonet-Lauragais or Villefranche-de -Lauragais ). Alfonso von Poitiers was the younger brother of King Louis IX. (1214–1270) and through his brother's marriage to Johanna the Pious (1220–1271), the only heiress of the mighty county of Toulouse , the French king hoped to gain territorial and political power. In fact, the marriage remained childless and after the death of both spouses in 1271, the county of Toulouse fell to the French crown.

Attractions

  • The parish church of Saint-Sernin (formerly Notre-Dame-des-Anges ) dates from the 15th century. It convinces with a mighty bell gable made of brick masonry , as is characteristic of the Tolosan Gothic . This one differs from the others, however, in that it has two corridors, one above the other and carried by machicoulis , which give the church a defensive appearance. The bell arcades have small stepped triangular gables ( arcs en miter ). The archivolt portal shows bases , capitals and a tympanum made of sandstone ; old photos still show two figure niches left and right of the portal. The single nave interior with the semicircular apse is vaulted. The church building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1926 .
  • The market hall ( hall ) dates from the 18th century and is located in the center of the village. Mighty brick arcades with pillars form the substructure, which is covered by a wooden roof structure. It was recognized as a Monument historique in 1973 .
