Parish Church of Saint-Pierre in Asque

Asque is a French commune with 118 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of La Barthe-de-Neste ).

The inhabitants are called Asquois and Asquoises .

Asque is located about nine kilometers east-southeast of Bagnères-de-Bigorre in the historic vice-county of Nébouzan .

Asque lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Arros , one of its tributaries, largely marks the border with the southeastern neighboring municipality of Esparros, in which it rises.

Tributaries of the Esqueda originate on the territory of the municipality:

  • the Cilh and its tributary
    • the Ruisseau de Troy.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Asca. Its etymology remains unclear.

Toponyms and mentions of Asque were:

  • Fortanerius d'Asca (1300, elevation in Bigorre),

Population development

After the records began, the population rose to a peak of around 725 by the second half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to 100 inhabitants during short recovery phases up to the 1990s, before settling on one since the turn of the millennium Level of around 120 inhabitants was able to stabilize.

Attractions

  • Parish Church of Saint-Pierre. It has its origins in a Gothic building from the 13th century, which was largely destroyed in an earthquake in 1660 and of which only fragments have survived. An order from the court in Bagnères-de-Bigorre ordered the residents of Asque to set up pasture. Sculptural friezes with various motifs from the 14th or 15th century can be seen, mainly human heads, especially with three entwined faces, and quadrupeds.
