The second section in Sardinia was determined for a long time by a top group of five, consisting of Mauro Facci , Arnaud Labbe , Simone Masciarelli , Frédéric Bessy and Pawel Brutt . The five drivers had pulled away after nine kilometers and had a maximum advantage of 5:21 minutes at race kilometer 88. However, the escape was unsuccessful and so Brutt was overtaken by the peloton as the last driver in the group eight kilometers from the finish. So the decision was made in the mass sprint, which was overshadowed by a mass fall 1,200 meters from the finish. In the sprint, the Australian Robbie McEwen won ahead of the Italian world champion Paolo Bettini and his compatriot Alessandro Petacchi .

Danilo Di Luca took over the lead in the overall classification from his team-mate Enrico Gasparotto due to the better final placement on the stage . McEwen took the lead in the points classification with his victory and Pawel Brutt secured the Maglia Verde by winning the only mountain classification of the day .

As on the day before, on the largely flat third section of the tour, outliers dominated the action for a long time. After just three kilometers, five riders had pulled away on the last stage on the island of Sardinia . Elio Aggiano , Mickaël Buffaz and Alexandre Pichot were overtaken by the peloton again after 105 kilometers, while Giovanni Visconti and Michail Ignatjew continued their escape. But the sprinter teams Predictor-Lotto and Team Milram increased the pace of the main field and the lead melted away. Ignatjew was finally made the last runaway four kilometers from the finish line. In the mass sprint of the main field, in which several riders fell again one kilometer from the finish, Alessandro Petacchi , who was subsequently completely dissolved, won ahead of Robert Förster and Maximiliano Richeze . Petacchi was able to celebrate his 20th Giro stage win.

In the overall standings, Enrico Gasparotto got the pink jersey back from his team-mate Danilo Di Luca due to his better position on the day . Petacchi took the lead in the points classification by winning the stage. In the other ratings, the wearers kept their jerseys.

The 153-kilometer first section on the Italian mainland began quietly after the drivers were unable to train on the previous day of rest due to problems with the ferry connection. After 35 kilometers, Markel Irízar , Jurij Kriwzow and Pawel Brutt pulled away from the main field and continuously increased their lead. After the field started chasing the runaways, the rain set in, causing several falls in the field on the wet and slippery road. World champion Paolo Bettini and the wearer of the pink jersey Enrico Gasparotto were affected by this. As a result of the falls, the three riders in the front were able to extend their lead back to almost seven minutes.

In the final climb to the pilgrimage site of Montevergine di Mercogliano , Brutt initially attacked in the breakaway group, but was unable to break away from his two competitors. In the meantime, the main field fell apart and the favorites quickly shortened the lead of the leaders. After Brutt, Kriwzow and Irízar had been overtaken, František Raboň first attacked nine kilometers from the finish. His attack fizzled out due to the counterattack by Julio Pérez Cuapio , who was able to beat the 40-strong group of favorites for about half a minute. After Liquigas increased the pace, the group fell apart and Cuapio's lead melted to a few seconds. 800 meters from the finish, Cuapio was put in place and the sprint came, which Danilo Di Luca won ahead of Riccardo Riccò and Damiano Cunego .

By winning the stage, Di Luca again took the lead in the overall ranking and also the lead in the mountain ranking. Robbie McEwen got the cyclamen jersey from Alessandro Petacchi back with two points in the intermediate sprint. Vincenzo Nibali secured the white jersey of the junior competition for the first time, which he had already worn as a substitute on the 2nd and 4th stages.

After only 15 kilometers, the French Mickaël Buffaz and the Russian Michail Ignatjew pulled away from the field. Both had already been together in a leading group in front of the field for a long time on the third stage. On the way to Frascati , at the gates of the Italian capital Rome , they quickly expanded their lead to over five minutes within the first hour of their flight. On a small intermediate slope, about 55 kilometers from the finish, Buffaz had to let his colleague go. While the Frenchman was overtaken by the field a little later, it took Ignatjew to race kilometer 153 before he was put off the field.

Shortly before the merger, at the foot of the only mountain classification of the day, František Raboň attacked from the field, but could not pull away and was soon caught up again. Further isolated attacks followed in the climb to the mountain classification. Finally Emanuele Sella and Lorenzo Bernucci reached the top with a small margin. But neither they were able to break away like Raboň, as the teams in the main field kept the pace consistently high. Like on the previous flat stages, there was another mass sprint, which Robert Förster won ahead of Thor Hushovd and Alessandro Petacchi .

With his third place, Petacchi again took the lead in the points classification from Robbie McEwen .

On the stage from Tivoli to Spoleto , with three mountain ratings, a 23-man group tried to pull away from the field after a quiet first hour of racing without attacks. Ricardo Serrano had initiated the attack, but due to the size and composition of the group, the peloton quickly caught them again. After the merger, Hubert Schwab , Christophe Kern , Luis Felipe Laverde , Daniele Contrini and Marco Pinotti start the next attack. Pinotti was the best placed driver in the group in the overall standings, 3:11 minutes behind Danilo Di Luca . The quintet quickly pulled away from the field and continuously expanded their lead to over seven minutes. In the peloton, neither Liquigas , as the team of overall leader Di Luca, nor the sprinter teams, who did not expect a mass finish because of the wavy stage profile , reacted .

In the last climb of the day to Forca di Cerro, Laverde pushed the pace in the leading group at the steepest point and only Pinotti was able to follow the pace. Behind the duo, Schwab and Kern formed the chasing group, while Contrini fell significantly behind. At the finish line, Pinotti let his rival Laverde win the day. Third place went to Christope Kern, 1:30 minutes behind, who beat Hubert Schwab in the sprint. The peloton reached the goal 7:09 minutes behind, from which Fortunato Baliani had broken away on the last descent.

For the first time in his career, Pinotti secured the overall leader's jersey 3:30 minutes ahead of Schwab, who replaced Vincenzo Nibali as the best young driver. Laverde took on the green jersey of the best climber with three victories in the mountain classifications. The UCI Professional Continental Team Ceramiche Panaria-Navigare took the lead in the team competition .

The longest stage of this year's Giro, at 254 kilometers, was long characterized by an outlier quintet. This group formed 9 kilometers after the start of Rubens Bertogliati , Elio Aggiano , Beñat Albizuri and Fabien Patanchon and was able to gain a lead of a maximum of 11 minutes over the main field in the undulating terrain. As the best-placed overall in the group - the Spaniard Albizurri - more than 22 minutes behind the the pink jersey propelled T-Mobile poker pro Marco Pinotti had the T-Mobile team was limited to the speed control in the main draw. The Milram team around Alessandro Petacchi , who was again looking for a day's success, had to take care of the follow-up work.

At the biggest obstacle of the day, the 12.4 km long ascent to the 995 m high Valico Croce a Mori , the runaway's lead had already shrunk to a minute, so that there was no longer any prospect of a successful escape attempt. The merger took place 30 kilometers before the finish line, and when the team was tightened up by Quick Step , the field split into two parts for a short time when some of the best sprinters were left behind. After 10 kilometers, however, the merger was restored. So it was again in a mass sprint on the home stretch in the Mugello Autodrom. Salvatore Commesso tried to avoid this with a quick start, but was caught by the top sprinters on the last kilometer. In the sprint from the front, Alessandro Petacchi won his second stage this year.

The overall leader's jersey remained with Marco Pinotti, Alessandro Petacchi increased his lead in the points classification thanks to the day's success. The other jerseys were also successfully defended by their wearers.

On the undulating eighth section in Emilia-Romagna , a large breakaway group with 23 riders formed early on. The most famous riders in the group were world champions Paolo Bettini , George Hincapie , Francisco Vila , Emanuele Sella , Riccardo Riccò and José Luis Rubiera . Riccò, however, probably at the instigation of his 22 comrades-in-arms, dropped back from the escape group, as he posed a serious threat to the favorites for the overall victory and thus endangered a successful breakaway attempt.

The remaining 22 drivers extended their lead up to race kilometer 140 to almost seven minutes, while the teams from Saunier Duval-Prodir and T-Mobile controlled the pace in the main field . The large escape group remained amicably together until about five kilometers from the goal before William Walker launched the first attack. Attacks by Mario Aerts and Rinaldo Nocentini followed , which, like Walker's attack, were unsuccessful. Only Pawel Brutt could no longer follow the group. 500 meters from the finish line, Sella then tried to launch the decisive attack, but he was also unable to break away decisively. In the following sprint with 21 drivers, the Norwegian Kurt Asle Arvesen won , who relegated Bettini to second place 50 meters from the finish. Third place went to the Kazakh Assan Basayev .

Arvesen won the second Giro arrival in Fiorano Modenese , near the test track of the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team , for the second time. The first arrival in 1975 was won by his farmer Knut Knudsen .

In the overall standings, the Italian Andrea Noè moved up to second place, 28 seconds behind Marco Pinotti . The Russian Alexander Arekejew took the lead in the junior ranking and the team from Lampre-Fondital took the lead in the team ranking.

The peloton , led by Milram and T-Mobile , in pursuit of the runaway quartet near Sarzana

The ninth stage took the riders to Lido di Camaiore in Tuscany . At the beginning there was a long climb in the second category. Due to the profile, the stage started calmly and so the first two hours of racing were mastered with an average of only about 27 km / h. Shortly before the summit of the Passo del Cerreto, Elio Aggiano initiated the first attack, whereby the drivers with ambitions for the Maglia Verde also accelerated the pace. Luis Felipe Laverde , Emanuele Sella and Pietro Caucchioli finally reached the summit with just under 40 seconds ahead of the peloton. On the following descent, they then slowed down and fell back into the field.

As a result, a quartet consisting of Simone Masciarelli , Frédéric Bessy , Andrej Kunizki and Nicolas Crosbie took off in the downhill. The four drivers were able to gain a maximum of three minutes ahead of the peloton, in which the Milram team and the T-Mobile team did the pace work. About sixteen kilometers from the finish, Mikhail Ignatiev and Ivan Rowny tried to catch up with the escape group from the main field, but they did not succeed. The escape of the runaway quartet soon ended six kilometers before their arrival in Lido di Camaiore. In the subsequent mass sprint, the Italian Danilo Napolitano celebrated his first victory in one of the three big country tours ahead of Robbie McEwen and Alessandro Petacchi .

There were no changes in the lead in the classification, so all drivers kept their jerseys.

The second mountain stage of the tour began, compared to the previous stages, very restless. Right at the beginning, drivers kept trying to break away from the main field. On the climb to the first mountain classification of the day, George Hincapie , Iván Parra , Alberto Losada , Fortunato Baliani , Hubert Dupont and Mauricio Ardila pulled away from the field. Due to the composition of the group, in which Hincapie was a serious threat to the favorites, they were able to extend their lead to only about five minutes. In the climb to the second mountain classification, the group, whose lead had already melted to about a minute, fell apart. Ardila and Dupont could no longer follow the pace of their escape companions and Hincapie fell behind due to a flat tire. However, he was able to catch up with the leading trio again before the mountain classification.

When the final ascent to Santuario Nostra Signora della Guardia started, the group of favorites had already been reduced to around 50 riders. In the lead quartet, Iván Parra launched the first attack, which only George Hincapie could follow. However, he was unable to counter Parra's second attack. Due to the pace dictated by the Liquigas team , the number of drivers in the group of favorites decreased significantly. Then Danilo attacked Di Luca , whom none of his competitors could follow, and caught up with Parra. Both were quickly caught by the field and Leonardo Piepoli then attacked. Also Emanuele Sella and Andy Schleck sat a little later on in the group. In the group of favorites Di Luca attacked again, only Gilberto Simoni followed at a slight distance. Schleck was quickly caught by Di Luca. Piepoli was the first rider to reach the summit and won his third stage of the Tour of Italy ahead of Danilo Di Luca and Andy Schleck.

Andrea Noè , who finished tenth, took the lead in the overall standings with 1:08 minutes on the new runner-up Marzio Bruseghin and secured the pink jersey for the first time since the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia 1998 . He is the oldest driver who has ever worn a leadership jersey on one of the three major national tours. Danilo Di Luca regained first place in the mountain classification from Luis Felipe Laverde and Andy Schleck secured the lead in the junior classification from Riccardo Riccò .

The almost 200-kilometer-long flat stage started again quite calmly and only after 33 kilometers of racing did Pierre Drancourt and Lilian Jégou start the first attack. But they couldn't break away. It was only when Mickaël Buffaz and Carl Naibo attacked that the peloton let them go. A few kilometers after the start of the breakaway attempt, Naibo took the pace out of his drive and Buffaz continued the escape alone. He quickly expanded his lead, but on the only small bump of the day he lost so much time that he briefly toyed with the idea of ending the escape early. After his team management persuaded him to continue the flight, he increased the lead on the field to a maximum of 9:15 minutes. With a gap of 58:39 minutes in the overall classification to Andrea Noè , the main field initially made no move to pursue. It wasn't until the sprinter teams took up chase that Buffaz's lead diminished dramatically. The escape ended 13 kilometers from the destination after a solo journey of 147 kilometers.

After the merger, the race started again almost ten kilometers from the finish, as the sprinters and their approachers were already fighting for the best starting position for the upcoming mass sprint. An attack by Michail Ignatjew was unsuccessful because of the high pace of the peloton. In the mass sprint, Alessandro Petacchi secured his third stage win ahead of Gabriele Balducci and Robbie McEwen . The final sprint was overshadowed by the falls of several drivers who slipped on the finish line and the sprayed sponsor pictures, as these had partially dissolved due to the rain.

There were no changes in the various ratings.

The stage that took the riders to the “roof of the Giro d'Italia” started very quickly despite the difficult profile. Right from the start, drivers kept attacking to initiate a successful one. After 14 kilometers, the French Yoann Le Boulanger and Christophe Riblon pulled away from the field, who quickly expanded their lead to over 17 minutes in a fast first hour of racing, which was completed at an average speed of 46.1 km / h that the main field was preparing to pursue them.

When the climb to Colle dell'Agnello started, the breakaway duo disintegrated and Le Boulanger took sole lead. In the peloton, the Saunier Duval-Prodir team around its captain Gilberto Simoni had taken the pace work in hand and drastically reduced the field to a group of only seven riders around the favorites. The lead of the outliers decreased as quickly as it increased due to the high speed of the favorite group, which was formed by Danilo Di Luca , Eddy Mazzoleni , Gilberto Simoni, Leonardo Piepoli , Andy Schleck , Stefano Garzelli and Damiano Cunego . Garzelli soon also fell back from the group of favorites. The Cima Coppi des Giros, at the summit, was secured by Yoann Le Boulanger ahead of Christophe Riblon, who followed with a gap of 2:43 minutes. The favorites group was 5:58 minutes behind. In the following descent, Garzelli caught up with the favorites group again.

At the foot of the ascent to Col d'Izoard , the favorites first overtook Riblon before Simoni and Piepoli first tried to exploit their numerical superiority. The attack initially split the group in two, as Garzelli and Mazzoleni could no longer follow. However, they caught up with the quintet again a little later. Garzelli was then again the first driver to permanently lose touch with the group. He was followed by Piepoli, who had been leading his captain Simoni for a long time. A little later he increased the pace of the group and tested the condition of his four competitors. After Simoni's pace increased further, Damiano Cunego was the next to lose contact with the group. About three kilometers before the summit, the remaining quartet then overtook the leader Le Boulanger, while Cunego caught up with the leading group on a short flat stretch. Shortly before the summit, Danilo attacked Di Luca and his four comrades got into trouble. They only caught up with Di Luca on the descent to Briançon .

In Briançon, Di Luca then attacked again on the 1.3 kilometer final climb towards the goal. He was followed by Andy Schleck and Gilberto Simoni. A few hundred meters, Di Luca accelerated the pace again, which also caused Schleck to fall back. In the final sprint, Di Luca then distanced Simoni in the sprint and secured the second stage win as a soloist and the third overall. Andy Schleck took third place.

Danilo Di Luca took over the pink jersey from his team-mate Andrea Noè again by winning the day . His lead over second-placed Marzio Bruseghin before the upcoming mountain time trial was 1:03 minutes.

The first individual time trial that was held in a mountain time trial was 12.6 kilometers long. The drivers had to overcome 734 meters in altitude. The stage was the highlight of this year's Giros and was dedicated to the late Marco Pantani , who won the pink jersey in Oropa in 1999 .

The first driver to start at 1:45 p.m. was Aaron Olsen from Team T-Mobile , 159th at the time and last in the overall standings, already 2:06:56 hours behind the leader Danilo Di Luca . Di Luca took to the track as the last starter at 16:38.

The first target time among the weaker drivers was set by the Italian Giovanni Visconti . Only the Mexican climbing specialist Julio Pérez Cuapio and the US time trial champion David Zabriskie were able to beat the Italian's time. When the favorites for the overall standings took to the track, Leonardo Piepoli surprisingly set a new best time of 28:56 minutes. He had steadily improved in the course of his journey and clearly undercut Zabriskie's time by 18 seconds.

Among the favorites, only Danilo Di Luca showed his qualities on the mountain. Gilberto Simoni , Damiano Cunego and Andy Schleck continued to lose valuable seconds in the battle for the lead in the overall standings to Di Luca, who finished third at the end of the day.

The Italian time trial champion Marzio Bruseghin secured victory , who with a low and powerful cadence undercut Piepoli's time by one second. He also shortened his gap to Di Luca by eight seconds.

On the stage through the Lombard foothills of the Alps , some drivers tried to break away from the main field right from the start. It was only after about 80 kilometers of racing that the German Sven Krauss made the decisive advance. Krauss quickly extended his lead at the foot of the ascent to Passo di San Marco to around two minutes before a group of six, including Michael Rasmussen and Paolo Bettini , took up the chase. However, the main field reacted to the attack and caught up with the sextet, whereupon Bettini attacked again. This time a group of eleven chasers formed, which Sven Krauss soon caught up with. Since Krauss could no longer follow the pace of the well-harmonized group on the climb to San Marco, he also fell back from this. The leading group disintegrated for the first time just before the summit. Paolo Bettini, Alberto Losado and Kurt Asle Arvesen were the first to fail to follow the pace. Meanwhile, Stefano Garzelli attacked in the main field after his Acqua & Sapone team had been in the lead for a long time. In the escape group, Sylwester Szmyd , José Luis Rubiera , Michael Rasmussen, Iván Parra and Fortunato Baliani were the first riders to reach the summit with a two-minute lead over the large field.

In the following descent, the breakaway group increased again to eight riders after Marco Pinotti , Iban Mayo and Paolo Bettini caught up. The group around Garzelli also expanded, as he received the company of Eddy Mazzoleni , Gilberto Simoni , Franco Pellizotti , Massimo Codol and Paolo Savoldelli . Due to the racing situation, Mayo initially dropped back into the chasing group to support his captain Simoni, and Pellizotti waited for the peloton to help Danilo Di Luca . In the flat section on the second ascent of the day, the pursuers caught up with the leading group and immediately took over the pace work. The 16-strong group disintegrated immediately on the climb, leaving seven riders in the lead with Savoldelli, Mazzoleni, Garzelli, Simoni, Baliani, Parra and Bettini. In the group of around 20 people behind, the teams from Lampre-Fondital and Liquigas tried desperately to shorten the one-minute gap.

On the flat 25 kilometers to Bergamo that followed , the one-minute lead remained constant. About four kilometers from the finish, there was a last small climb on cobblestones, in which Gilberto Simoni attacked from the lead group. Garzelli and Bettini followed closely behind. Simoni maintained his small lead up to a few hundred meters from the finish, but Garzelli was able to catch up with Simoni due to the slipstream of two motorcycles from the Italian TV channel RAI and then jump over it shortly before the finish line. Simoni, who was able to catch up on Danilo Di Luca, Damiano Cunego , Marzio Bruseghin and Andy Schleck by 38 seconds , took second place ahead of Paolo Bettini.

There were again no changes in the individual ratings.

The first stage in the Dolomites , at the same time the royal stage of this year's event, was marked from the start by a 22-strong breakaway group that formed at race kilometer 21. The group, which included Paolo Bettini , Fortunato Baliani , Salvatore Commesso , Michael Rasmussen and Pietro Caucchioli , extended its lead to just over six minutes until the ascent to Passo di San Pellegrino . As the group increased, the number of riders in the group decreased to 19 and their lead decreased again. In addition, a chase quartet was formed consisting of Leonardo Piepoli , Riccardo Riccò , Julio Pérez Cuapio and Iván Parra . The pursuers reached the summit 1:03 minutes behind the leaders and the group around the Maglia Rosa followed, 3:43 minutes behind.

On the subsequent descent, the pursuers caught up with the leaders. After the ascent to Passo di Giau , some riders quickly fell behind again and so 18 remained at the front of the field, who still had an approximately four-minute lead over the group behind them for the favorites. Stefano Garzelli and Marzio Bruseghin fell out of this group of favorites . After an attack by Danilo Di Luca , the group shrank to just five riders, including Di Luca, Gilberto Simoni , Damiano Cunego , Andy Schleck and Eddy Mazzoleni , who climbed the summit of Giau 2:25 minutes behind Piepoli , Riccò, Pérez Cuapio and Parra.

On the descent from the Giau, some caught up with the chasing group, which also caught up with drivers from the former large leading group on the descent. When the third climb of the day started, several riders quickly lost touch, leaving nine riders who, however, no longer included Eddy Mazzoleni, who had attacked and was continuously reducing the gap to the leading group. Michael Rasmussen was also still between the favorites and the leaders. Meanwhile, the pace fell asleep in the favorites group. The leading quartet reached the summit with a lead of 1:20 minutes over Mazzoleni and 4:00 minutes over the group of Maglia Rosa.

In the final climb to Tre Cime di Lavaredo , Parra initially accelerated the pace in the leading group, but was just as unable to break away from his competitors as Riccò. The group around Danilo Di Luca continued to lose a lot of time, as none of the favorites wanted to take over the pace work. It was only when Di Luca saw his jersey against Mazzoleni in danger that he decided to take the lead, whereupon the group reduced to four drivers and they caught up with Rasmussen. In the steepest section with an 18% gradient, Danilo Di Luca attacked, whom only Simoni could follow with a slight margin. Schleck and Cunego, on the other hand, had problems and couldn't keep up with the pace, followed by Simoni a little later. The leading quartet stayed together up to a kilometer from the finish line. It was only after an attack by Parra that Pérez Cuapio lost touch. On the home straight, Saunier Duval-Prodir secured a double victory. Riccardo Riccò won his first Giro stage ahead of Leonardo Piepoli and Iván Parra.

In the overall standings Eddy Mazzoleni took second place in the overall standings, 1:51 minutes behind Danilo Di Luca. Leonardo Piepoli took the lead in the classification of the Maglia Verde, which he had already worn since the 12th stage, representing Di Luca. Saunier Duval-Prodir secured the lead in the team classification for the first time during the tour.

After an extremely quiet race on the first 123 kilometers of the stage, which were mastered at an average speed of less than 30 km / h, Laurent Mangel and Benoît Joachim opened the race with an attack. Behind them, another breakaway group tried to form, but this was prevented by the main field. After a short time, two larger groups were able to break away from the field, one of which soon caught up with the leading duo. Stefano Garzelli then attacked from the main field in one of the small climbs . Meanwhile, the breakaway groups disintegrated and Laurent Mangel, Pietro Caucchioli and Ricardo Serrano formed the new leading trio. José Luis Rubiera and Benoît Joachim soon caught up with them. Joachim lost touch again after a short time and formed the chasing quartet together with Stefano Garzelli, Julian Dean and Pablo Lastras . Through Garzelli's leadership work, the pursuers at the foot of the Bannberg caught up with the leadership group. Garzelli was able to outrun his seven rivals in the climb and reached the summit of Bannberg with a lead of 43 seconds over the group of five riders who were pursuing. Behind these, another group of twelve drivers had formed, which were already more than two minutes behind.

As a result, Garzelli maintained his lead and reached Lienz , where a 17-kilometer lap on a circuit had to be completed, solo. In the end he secured his second win of the day ahead of Laurent Mangel and Ricardo Serrano, who reached the goal 1:01 minutes behind. The peloton crossed the finish line 8:10 minutes behind.

There were no changes in the four individual ratings, but the Ceramiche Panaria-Navigare team regained the lead in the team rating.

On the penultimate mountain stage of this year's Giro with perhaps the most difficult mountain finish on Monte Zoncolan , a top group of twelve riders led by Paolo Bettini and mountain specialist Fortunato Baliani pulled away from the main field after just 24 kilometers . Thanks to the good cooperation, the group was able to extend its lead to over five minutes on the first two mountain classifications of the stage over the field with the best placed in the overall classification. In the approach to the final climb to Monte Zoncolan, Liquigas , the team of overall leader Danilo Di Luca , increased the pace so that the lead of the outliers gradually shrank.

With the start of the 10.1 kilometer long and up to 22% steep final climb, the “elimination race” began in the main field, while the breakaway group fell apart and Dario Cioni tried to reach the goal on his own. Gilberto Simoni was the first of the favorites to take the initiative, in the end only the overall leader Danilo Di Luca , Damiano Cunego and Leonardo Piepoli could follow him at a slight distance, Eddy Mazzoleni and Andy Schleck, however, had to let go. Schleck managed to get back to the group. With six kilometers to go, Di Luca fell behind, then Cunego. On the last two kilometers, the trio around Simoni finally managed to catch up with the two remaining outliers Cioni and Massimo Codol . The decision was made between the two Italians with the better end for Gilberto Simoni, to whom his team-mate Piepoli let the victory. Andy Schleck came third after a self-sacrificing fight. Overall leader Danilo Di Luca crossed the finish line in fourth, 32 seconds behind, and now has all the trumps in hand to wear the pink jersey all the way to Milan .

Even after the 17th section there were no changes in the individual ratings. Andy Schleck from Luxembourg only took second place in the overall standings, 2:24 minutes behind Di Luca. The Saunier Duval-Prodir team took back the lead in the team classification after just one stage.

The stage was overshadowed by the suspension of Aketza Peña , who drove for the Euskaltel-Euskadi team . Peña tested positive for doping at the Giro del Trentino , a stage race in the Trentino-South Tyrol region , in April. His team then excluded him from the Giro and suspended him until further notice.

On the flat section from Udine to Riese Pio X , after the difficult mountain stages of the previous days, some drivers tried to initiate a successful escape attempt early on. Only after 35 kilometers a septet consisting of Addy Engels , Francisco Vila , Franck Renier , Maxim Gurow , Eric Berthou , Pedro Horrillo and Michail Ignatjew managed to break away from the peloton. But due to the composition of the group, in which Vila, who was 16th overall, was a threat to the leaders, and the ambitions of Team Milram to help their sprinter Alessandro Petacchi to a fourth stage win, the lead only grew just over two minutes.

When the 16.5-kilometer circuit in Riese Pio X had to be bypassed twice, the lead had melted to around 1:20 minutes. The top group soon disintegrated as Vila, Ignatjew and Horrillo broke off their flight. This left a quartet that allowed the field to take the lead up to seven kilometers from the finish. When the merger came about, the Tinkoff Credit Systems team also took on the leadership role of the Milram team, and a little later also ag2r Prévoyance , who were at the forefront with Lloyd Mondory and Aljaksandr Ussau up to 500 meters from the finish line. However, Mondory fell in the last left turn before the finish and his team-mate Ussau could no longer evade. This suddenly created a small gap to the rest of the drivers between Matteo Tosatto , Alessandro Petacchi and Maximiliano Richeze behind them . Petacchi initially looked for Tosatto's slipstream, but had to start the last 500 meters alone from the front. By skillfully changing lanes he tried to get Richeze out of his slipstream, which finally succeeded. Thus, Petacchi secured his fourth stage win from Richeze and Matti Breschel .

There were no changes in leadership in the individual and team competitions. Only Alessandro Petacchi was able to increase his lead over Danilo Di Luca in the points classification with his victory .

The last mountain stage of the tour was very rough for the first 80 kilometers in difficult conditions with pouring rain. Again and again individual drivers tried to attack, including Paolo Bettini , Axel Merckx and Stefano Garzelli . However, these attempts all ended unsuccessfully. Shortly before the mountain classification at Passo Pian delle Fugazze, Leonardo Piepoli attacked and secured the ten points and thus the green jersey of the best climber. On the descent Iban Mayo managed to break away from the main field. A group of six, consisting of Stefano Garzelli, Giovanni Visconti , Marco Marzano , Michael Rasmussen , Evgeni Petrow and Alberto Losada , was able to catch up with him quickly. This group worked well together and was able to pull out a lead of over four minutes on the peloton. Finally, Mayo and Losada attacked again and were able to break away from their five pursuers by almost 30 seconds.

On the last day's climb, Mayo also managed to outrun his last companion. Losada then fell back into the chasing group. Meanwhile, Michael Rasmussen tried to reach Mayo to the summit, but failed. On the descent, Mayo was able to maintain his lead and finally reached the finish line 43 seconds ahead of Giovanni Visconti. Third was Marco Marzano, fourth was Yevgeny Petrow, who was able to improve by one place in the overall standings. The group of favorites reached the finish line 3:13 minutes behind the day's winner.

The second, flat to slightly bumpy individual time trial was 43 kilometers long. The first driver to start at 12:00 noon was Oscar Gatto from Team Gerolsteiner , at the time 141st and last in the overall standings, 3:34:48 hours behind the leader Danilo Di Luca . Di Luca took to the track as the last starter at 4:45 p.m.

The first set times on the time trial course from Bardolino to Verona were initially set by the time trial specialists Michail Ignatjew , László Bodrogi and David Zabriskie . At the end of the day, all three were among the top ten drivers.

Among the leaders in the overall standings, Paolo Savoldelli set the absolute best time in the first intermediate time, but this did not pose a threat to the favorites for overall victory. The top five drivers in the overall standings were only seven seconds apart at the first split, only Gilberto Simoni was 28 seconds behind Danilo Di Luca , who was twelve seconds behind Savoldelli. Savoldelli also slightly extended his lead in the second and third intermediate times. Among the favorites, Eddy Mazzoleni had now emerged as the best roller. His lead over Di Luca at the third intermediate time was already 54 seconds.

In the end, Paolo Savoldelli secured his first stage win with 36 seconds on Eddy Mazzoleni and 38 seconds on David Zabriskie. Andy Schleck took sixth place and got 29 seconds on Di Luca who was eighth. Gilberto Simoni, who finished 17th and lost over two minutes to Mazzoleni, had to relinquish his podium position to Mazzoleni.

There were no changes in leadership in the individual and team rankings.

Even on the final stage to Milan , drivers tried again and again at the beginning of the peloton, but this was not successful in the long term due to the pace of the field. In the intermediate sprint of the stage in Cambiago , which the field drove over, the Russian Michail Ignatjew secured victory in the TV Garibaldi standings ahead of Mickaël Buffaz .

This was followed by the entrance to Milan, where a circuit had to be avoided ten more times. Ignatjew then attacked on the fifth lap to secure the first stage win for his team Tinkoff Credit Systems . Due to the speed work of Liquigas and Milram , Ignatiev's escape ended in the eighth round and, due to the high speed, there were no further attempts to break away. In the mass sprint of the field, Alessandro Petacchi secured his fifth day win ahead of Maximiliano Richeze and Paolo Bettini .

The Italian Danilo Di Luca won his first three-week tour with 1:55 minutes ahead of the “discovery of the tour”, Andy Schleck from Luxembourg and 2:25 minutes over his compatriot Eddy Mazzoleni . The Maglia Ciclamino won Alessandro Petacchi with 185 points well ahead of Di Luca and Bettini. In the mountain classification, Leonardo Piepoli was another Italian who won ahead of Fortunato Baliani . Andy Schleck won the first-time junior competition ahead of Riccardo Riccò . In the team standings, the Spanish team Saunier Duval-Prodir , which won a total of four stages, was in the lead.
