MPS Records / Discography

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is the discography of the German music label MPS Records . It combines the data from the book publication Jazzin 'the Black Forest: The complete Guide to SABA / MPS Recordings with the information from the records and their covers . It relates exclusively to the German market. The catalog / order numbers listed here apply to records up to 1984, and thereafter to CD publications. ( Music cassettes are not included here.) Republics are not listed.

introduction

MPS Records emerged from the record company SABA in 1968 and initially worked in self-distribution . In 1971, the label found a distribution partner in BASF Records who distributed the program until 1976, before Metronome Records marketed the MPS program in 1977 - until the label was sold in 1983.

In 1979 around 60 titles from the MPS program appeared on the German reissue label Crystal in its Crystal Jazz series (distribution: EMI-Electrola ).

After the end of the distribution contract with Metronome, MPS Records was sold to the PolyGram group in 1983 . From then on, Polydor was responsible for the MPS catalog. In 1994 the repertoire utilization was finally passed on to Motor Music , before it was incorporated into Universal Jazz in 1999 .

In 2014 Edel SE acquired the repertoire , subordinating it to its sub-label Edel: Kultur .

Part 1: Pre-MPS: SABA records 1963–1968

Since 1963 the company SABA has been publishing records in its own distribution with 5-digit order numbers and the prefix SB .

Albums

While the first albums were all released in a monomix , SABA began to publish more and more records in stereophony from 1965 onwards . This could be recognized by the suffix ST . Some albums released before 1965 were also re-released in stereo and given the ST suffix .

Bold order numbers indicate items that were republished by MPS from around March / April 1968.

Singles (Victoria / SABA / MPS)

Singles (in 7 ″ format) played a role above all with the MPS predecessor label SABA . They were published with 4-digit catalog numbers, starting with the number 3 . The first singles appeared in 1963 on the sub-label Victoria (prefix V ). In early 1964 the Victoria label was given up. From then on, the singles received the SABA label (prefix SB ). After SABA ended in March 1968, the order numbers were given the prefix MPS . In 1969 the MPS Discothek series was introduced, the catalog numbers of which were preceded by the number 8. During the time of BASF sales, exactly two singles appeared, here with the appropriate prefix.

The list begins with three singles with order numbers beginning with 2 . This is a loose series of voice recordings ( radio plays , etc.)

Sub-labels, series, special editions

MPS Records also operated some sub-labels and series such as Session , Center or the folk music label Top Five , all of which offered records at special prices. But also MPS self-published records, which could be sold under the then fixed price for records.

These publications were published with the number ranges 12XXX, 13XXX and 14XXX. The 12 series published in 1968 mainly contained older SABA material. The 13 series, released in 1970, contained inexpensive classical albums. With the 14 series, many older recordings from the regular program were offered at reduced prices.

center

With the success of the long-playing records in the mid-1960s, record labels in Germany were looking for a way to counter the existing fixed prices for records with cheap productions. Since a ruling by the Federal Court of Justice in 1966, it has now been possible for recording companies - under certain conditions - to offer their products below the fixed price. The EUROPA label successfully demonstrated this - initially with radio play productions for children, but later also with music albums - and offered its products for only 5 DM (instead of around 18 DM).

With its center label, SABA offered productions with ensembles and musicians in-house. Records were released with genres popular at the time such as country / cowboy music, Caribbean sounds but also folk music and hits, as well as compilations of material previously published on SABA, such as a singles compilation by Mary Roos z. B., or a selection of the repertoire of the prestige jazz label distributed by SABA and MPS.

But Center also found compilations with so-called no-name bands that sang current material from the international hit parades on the shelves of record dealers.

Center was published from 1966 to 1968 by SABA, from 1968 by MPS with 5-digit order numbers beginning with 17 .

Part 3: MPS Records in BASF sales 1971–1976

As of April 1971, MPS Records was distributed by BASF . The records were initially marketed under the numbering scheme CXX XXX. In the same year, BASF switched to an 8-digit order number system (XX XXXXX-X), which came into effect at the end of 1971. The production and pressing of the records continued to take place in Hanover in the DGG pressing plant (from 1973 Phonodisc GmbH). Pressings from the Sonopress press shop (Gütersloh) also appeared very occasionally.

Part 5: MPS Records in Polygram / UMG sales 1983-2013

In 1983 the label owner Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer sold MPS Records to the PolyGram group, which affiliated the Polydor label . In 1983 and 1984 only three completely new recordings were released by Polydor. Otherwise, the repertoire that was eventually moved to the Polydor / Verve jazz series was used by Polydor for secondary use. Polydor also releases the first CDs of MPS recordings. The records were manufactured and pressed in Hanover in the PRS Hanover pressing plant.

The Motor Music label, founded by Tim Renner in 1994, took over the program from MPS Records under the umbrella of PolyGram. Here, too, there have been various re-releases of the MPS repertoire, e.g. Partly with new artwork, and almost exclusively on CD (catalog number suffix : -2). Only a few publications contained previously unpublished or completely new material.

In January 1999, PolyGram became part of the Universal Music Group (UMG) and was from then on distributed by UMG. From the turn of the millennium, re-releases of the MPS repertoire on CD were brought onto the market under the label Universal Jazz and Universal Music Classics & Jazz .

Under the series MPS original vinyl Series were from the record company Speakers Corner Records in 2000 license a handful of albums placed on record on the market in which the company is not only the original artwork maintained but also that once the DGG , or Phonodisc obtained access to the original matrices created in the 1960s and 1970s (making the records practically exact copies of their original releases). These were made by the Pallas record factory in Diepholz.

Part 6: MPS Records in Edel Distribution from 2014

In 2014, Edel SE acquired the MPS catalog and, in cooperation with the news magazine Der Spiegel, initially launched the MPS KulturSPIEGEL Edition series , in which 25 selected MPS albums were re-released. In 2015, Edel reactivated MPS Records completely and - after a 30-year hiatus - began to release new albums on the label again, both on CD and vinyl . Both sound carrier formats are produced by the company's own company Optimal Media GmbH.

Edel SE also made large parts of the MPS catalog available digitally. Streaming and download offers are available from all common providers such as Spotify , Amazon , Deezer or iTunes . Qobuz and HighResAudio also make their offers available as uncompressed data in high resolution.
