Current course of the road
The current national road leads from the A4 motorway near Hambach to the border crossing with Germany , where it merges into the federal highway 406 .
Historic course of the road
The historic national road ran from Phalsbourg to the German border from 1824 , where it merged into Reichsstrasse 51, later Bundesstrasse 51 to Stuhr-Brinkum (near Bremen). In 2006 the section between Phalsbourg and the A4 motorway near Hambach was declassified. It went back to the route impériale 68. The length of the road before 2006 was 61 kilometers.

N 61a
The Route nationale 61 A , or N 61 A or RN 61 A for short , is a 100 meter long side branch of the N 61 that leads to the cross-border bridge over the Saar to Germany. The road leads to today's right bank of the federal highway 51 and was put into operation in 1985.
N 2061
The Route nationale 2061 , or N 2061 or RN 2061 for short , was the name of the old route of the N61 through Sarreguemines from 2000 to 2006, after the N61 was placed on a local expressway. Today she wears the number 82 D A .
