The Serie A teams of the 2008/09 season

The Serie A 2008/09 was the 77th season in the top Italian men's soccer division. It started on August 30, 2008 and ended on May 31, 2009 with the delivery of the Scudetto, the Italian championship trophy. Champion was defending champion Inter Milan , who won the fourth championship in a row and his 17th overall. The top scorer was Zlatan Ibrahimović with 25 goals, second place was shared by Marco Di Vaio from FC Bologna and Diego Milito from CFC Genoa with 24 goals each.

A total of 20 teams took part in the championship, the first 17 of Serie A 2007/08 and three promoted teams from Serie B , AC Chievo Verona , FC Bologna and US Lecce . The 20 clubs represented 13 of the 20 Italian regions . Lombardy was most strongly represented with three clubs, Atalanta Bergamo , AC Milan and Inter Milan . Piedmont , Liguria , Tuscany , Lazio and Sicily each provide two teams, while Friuli-Venezia Giulia , Veneto , Emilia-Romagna , Campania , Apulia , Calabria and Sardinia were each represented by one team. A new record was set even before the start of the season, as never before had six teams from southern Italy played in Serie A. The T90 Omni football from Nike is used as the match ball . The cup competition, the Coppa Italia , was won by Lazio Rome in the final against Sampdoria Genoa on penalties.
