The 68th Venice International Film Festival ( 68th Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica in Italian ) took place from August 31 to September 10, 2011 . Along with the Berlinale and the Cannes International Film Festival, they are among the three most important A festivals in the world. The film festival opened with George Clooney's competitive political drama The Ides of March . The US contribution Damsels in Distress by Whit Stillman was named as the graduation film and will be shown out of competition. The international jury, which awarded the Golden Lion , the main prize of the festival, to the Russian contribution Faust by Alexander Sokurow , was headed by the American Darren Aronofsky . Works by German-speaking filmmakers were represented in sub-sections.

As part of the film festival, a golden lion is regularly awarded for the life's work of a filmmaker. In the run-up to the festival, at the beginning of April 2011, the winner was announced: the film director and screenwriter Marco Bellocchio , who is one of the most influential representatives of contemporary Italian cinema. He was invited to the competition of the film festival twice with China is near (1967, Grand Jury Prize) and Buongiorno, notte - The Aldo Moro Case (2003). The ceremony took place on September 9th in the restored Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido , where a restored version of Bellocchio's In the Name of the Father (1972) was shown. The laudatory speaker was the multiple award-winning Italian film director Bernardo Bertolucci .

The Italian actress Vittoria Puccini moderated the opening and closing ceremony.

David Cronenberg ( A Dangerous Method )

The official program was presented on July 28, 2011 in Rome by Biennale President Paolo Baratta and the artistic festival director Marco Müller. 23 productions from 16 countries (including a "surprise film" that was presented during the film festival) compete for the Golden Lion, the festival's main prize. All films are exclusively world premieres. Müller, who put the program together for the last time in 2011, praised the competition as the selection closest to his ideas in his eight years of service. As with the previous edition , most of the invited directors came from Europe (10), followed by their colleagues from Asia (7) and North America (6). None of these had won the main prize in Venice in the past. After the German Tom Tykwer competed with three for the Golden Lion last year , no filmmaker from German-speaking countries received an invitation to the competition in 2011. Films from Africa, South America or Oceania were also not included.

As in 2010, US filmmakers were represented the most with five entries. These included Abel Ferrara's 4:44 Last Day on Earth , William Friedkin's black comedy Killer Joe with Matthew McConaughey and Emile Hirsch in the lead roles, and Todd Solondz 's Dark Horse . Ami Canaan Mann , daughter of the well-known director Michael Mann , made her directorial debut Texas Killing Fields , in which Sam Worthington is seen as a Texas police officer trying to solve a series of murders against women. The festival opened with The Ides of March by George Clooney . Clooney, after Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) represented in the competition again, not only directed but also produced the film, worked on the script and took on one of the leading roles. The film adaptation of Beau Willimon's play Farragut North focuses on a young idealistic press secretary (played by Ryan Gosling ) who faces fraud and corruption as an employee of a presidential candidate (Clooney) in the Ohio primary. The Canadian David Cronenberg took on the psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung (played by Michael Fassbender ) and his relationship with Sigmund Freud ( Viggo Mortensen ) and the patient Sabina Spielrein ( Keira Knightley ) in the German co-production A Dangerous Method . The psychodrama is based on Christopher Hampton's play The Talking Cure .

Roman Polański is represented in the competition with the theater adaptation Carnage

15 of the 23 directors ( Tomas Alfredson , Andrea Arnold , Cai Shangjun , Cronenberg, Friedkin, Gipi , Ann Hui , Eran Kolirin , Giorgos Lanthimos , Mann, Steve McQueen , Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi , Alexander Sokurow , Sion Sono and Wei Te-Sheng ) made their debut in the Venice Competition, while the French film director Philippe Garrel was competing for the main prize for the fifth time. In his tragic love drama Un été brulant about a painter who is abandoned by his partner, he once again entrusted his son Louis Garrel to the male lead alongside Monica Bellucci . After their successful directorial debut Persepolis (2007), Garrel's compatriot Vincent Paronnaud and Iranian Marjane Satrapi filmed another comic adaptation Satrapis (published in Germany under the title Chicken with Plums ) with Poulet aux prunes . The story is told by Satrapi's great-uncle Nasser Ali Khan, who in 1958 in Tehran decides to wait for death after his wife broke his lute in an argument . The Polish-French director Roman Polanski filmed with Carnage Yasmina Reza's successful four-man play God of Carnage . Jodie Foster , Kate Winslet , John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz can be seen as parents who come together to discuss a violent argument between their children. The situation escalates. As with the award-winning Broadway production, the setting was relocated to Brooklyn for the English-language film adaptation .

Great Britain was represented with three films in the competition. In addition to the artist Steve McQueen , who after his successful debut film Hunger the acting about sex addiction drama (2008) Shame starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan presents, presented Andrea Arnold with Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights , a film adaptation of the eponymous novel by Emily Brontë . At the side of Kaya Scodelario (Cathy), James Howson was the first black Heathcliff actor to be in a film version of Wuthering Heights . With the German-British coproduction Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, the Swede Tomas Alfredson filmed a thriller by John le Carré from the Cold War era . Gary Oldman slipped into the role of the British intelligence chief George Smiley , who after a failed operation is looking for a double agent in his own ranks.

Host Italy also came up with three competition entries. Cristina Comencini's love drama Quando la notte , set in the Italian Alps, tells of a woman who has to find her way around in her motherhood and falls in love with a new man. In addition to the debut film L'Ultimo Terrestre by comic author Gipis about an alien invasion, Emanuele Crialese also received his second invitation to Venice. In Terraferma , he focuses on a fishing family that provides shelter for African refugees.

Asia was represented with the comic adaptations Himizu by Sion Sono and Ann Huis ( Tao Jie - A Simple Life ), in which the friendship between a young man and his former domestic servant is discussed. The fact that the festival organization Wei Te-Sheng's contribution Saideke Balai led to the presentation of the official program as a Taiwanese-Chinese co-production caused Taiwan to be upset . The film about the struggle of indigenous tribes against the Japanese in the 1930s was produced and financed exclusively in Taiwan. Therefore, the Taiwan Government Information Bureau successfully requested a correction. In the past, Taiwanese film productions were misidentified at festivals, which has always led to irritation on the part of Taiwan. At the beginning of August, the invitation from Johnnie Tos Dyut Ming Gam ( Life Without Principle ) was announced. To, who was competing for the Golden Lion for the third time, tells of a bank teller, a criminal and a police inspector who run into financial difficulties before all three become aware of a stolen $ 5 million sum . As in the previous year, a Chinese contribution was presented as a surprise film. Ren shan ren hai ( People Mountain People Sea ) by Cai Shangjun , in which a man searches for the murderer of his younger brother.

The Russian Alexander Sokurow presented Faust, a film adaptation of the tragedy of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . The production with German-speaking actors, including the Viennese Johannes Zeiler in the title role and the German Hanna Schygulla , should bring him the Golden Lion . After Moloch (about Adolf Hitler ), Taurus (about Lenin ) and Solntse (about the Japanese emperor Hirohito ), the eight million euro production represents the last part of Sokurov's tetralogy about power and evil.

Feature films

23 feature films were shown in the competition, including the surprise film Ren shan ren hai , which was only announced during the course of the festival. Five of the contributions were produced by the United States, three each by France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Germany was represented with five co-productions.
