The SAP Open was an international tennis tournament of the ATP held annually in San José , USA . The first edition of the tournament in 1889 was the Pacific Coast Championships . Over the years, the venue changed from Monterey via San Rafael, Berkeley, San Francisco and Albany to San José (there from 1994).

A German-speaking player could not put himself on the list of winners. The record winner is the American William Johnston , who won the singles title a total of nine times. The most successful doubles player was John McEnroe , who won a total of eight times (six times with Peter Fleming ) with various partners . Record winners in singles since the beginning of the Open Era are John McEnroe and Andre Agassi , both of whom have each won five times.

The tournament last took place in February and lasted a week. It was played on hard court at the HP Pavilion , most recently for $ 546,930 in prize money, of which the winner received $ 98,700. The tournament took place for the last time in 2013. The rights were acquired by the ATP tournament in Memphis , which they sold to Rio de Janeiro. This ended one of the oldest tournaments in the world after 124 years.

From 1994 to 2001 the tournament was called Sybase Open , then Siebel Open and finally SAP Open (after the main sponsor SAP ).
