View over Barby in the Leysse plain

Barby is a French municipality with 3414 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

The place is located at 305  m about four kilometers east of the city center of Chambéry. The community extends on the southwest edge of the Bauges , a limestone massif in the northern French Prealps. Part of the 2.48 km² municipal area includes a section of a flat alluvial plain, which is formed by the Leysse and its left tributary Albanne . This part is densely populated and, together with the neighboring communities, creates a continuous suburb of Chambéry. The other part extends a few hundred meters to the east on the steeply rising, wooded foothills of the Bauges, where the municipal area rises to 655  m .

Barby is divided into the districts of La Bâtie and le Chemin Neuf . Neighboring municipalities are Challes-les-Eaux , La Ravoire , Saint-Alban-Leysse , Saint-Jean-d'Arvey and Curienne .

history

The Château de la Bâtie

The place was first mentioned in writing under the name Balbiacus from 1010 . During the centuries that followed, spellings with “l” ( Balby ) and “r” ( Barbi (e) ) were found. In the Middle Ages, the place formed a small lordship that belonged to the possessions of the Savoyard noble family von Seyssel . The seat of power was the Château de la Bât (h) ie . In 1670 it changed hands and the surrounding lands were raised to margraviate a little later . After Savoy was annexed to France in 1860, Barby first belonged to the canton of Chambéry-Nord until the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse was created in 1973.

Attractions

On a hill above the Leysse plain stands the Château de la Bâtie , a 13th century castle that was renovated in the 16th century. It is secured by a curtain wall with a Fausse-Braie and has two defense towers. In the chapel there is a Gallo-Roman mosaic from the 4th century, which was brought there after a find in Arbin . The registration as Monument historique also includes the facade, chimneys, the terrace and the mosaic.

With 3414 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Barby is one of the medium-sized communities in the Savoie department. The increasing urbanization in the second half of the 20th century transformed the place into a suburb of Chambéry and caused its population to multiply within a few decades, which had been constant at around 300 in the previous centuries.

Economy and Infrastructure

The originally rural community recorded a strong population growth in the 1960s and 1970s due to the construction of numerous social housing, and many small and medium-sized businesses were also established. As a result, Barby is now primarily a residential community for employees who work roughly equally outside the community in the greater Chambéry area and within the community. Despite the dense population, there are still a few hectares of vineyards. The place belongs to the wine-growing region of Savoie , in which the protected designations of origin Roussette de Savoie and Vin de Savoie apply.

The French Army's 13th Mountain Infantry Battalion is stationed in Barby .

Due to its proximity to Chambéry, the village benefits from its good transport connections without the community being directly affected by main traffic arteries. The Chambéry train station and the access roads to the A41 , A43 and N201 motorways (Chambéry city motorway) are only a few kilometers away. A department road also connects the place with Curienne. The main road D1006, the main road connection with Modane and the former N6, runs on the edge of the village . The Chambéry – Challes-les-Eaux airfield is partly on the municipal area, while the Chambéry-Savoie passenger airport is about 15 kilometers away on the other side of Chambéry.
