Cabrières is a French commune with 1623 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department of the Occitanie region .

Cabrières is 15 kilometers northeast of Nîmes in the Garrigues hills.
history
The area has been inhabited for more than 6000 years. This is mainly due to the convenient location. The village is located near a spring, is protected from the mistral and is easy to defend. In the 1st century BC, the Romans settled the area and six Roman villas were built. In 978 the village was first mentioned as Villa Cabrieras . In 1435 it finally got its current name. The name is derived from the Latin capra , which means goat . In the 16th century the village suffered from the Huguenot Wars . In 1943, the German occupiers established a military base in Cabrières.
Culture and sights
The village is characterized above all by its geological wealth: the oldest rock layers of the Languedoc can be found in Cabrières . They are between 500 and 325 million years old.
