Kevin Mark Phillips (born July 25, 1973 in Hitchin ) is a former English football player . At Sunderland AFC he holds the record for most goals scored after the end of World War II, which Garry Rowell had previously set.

Player career

society

Phillips played in the right-back position early in his career. After Southampton FC released him, he was signed by the semi-professional club Baldock Town . Here one discovered his nose for goal and his extraordinary ball handling and shifted him to the position of the striker. This change of position meant that Baldock was in the top flight of the league and also came astonishingly far in cup competitions such as the FA Trophy . During the 1994/95 season he was watched by Glenn Roeders Watford FC and signed by that club on December 19, 1994 for £ 10,000. Although his time at Watford was marked by injuries, he was able to score numerous goals.

In the 1995/96 season he played well, but was very tackled. A foot injury sustained towards the end of the season kept him away from football for a year and when he returned to the field, Watford was in midfield in the Second Division. Immediately after his recovery, he scored four goals relatively quickly, three of them in a hat-trick against Bristol City , but remained goalless for the remainder of the season. After that season it was sold to Sunderland AFC for £ 600,000 .

“Super Kev” quickly became Sunderland's hero and, together with Irish striker Niall Quinn, formed one of the most feared storm duos in the Football League. The undisputed highlight of his career so far were the 30 goals he scored in the Premier League in the 1999/2000 season , which earned him the Golden Shoe , an award for Europe's most successful goalscorer, and brought Sunderland to seventh place in the table. Phillips' scoring threat made him one of the key figures in Sunderland's most successful season in the first division, in which arch-rivals Newcastle United could also be beaten 2-1 in the stadium thanks to a Phillips goal. However, Sunderland's success did not last long and after the club's relegation from the North East of England, he returned to Southampton, where he had once started his career in the youth teams. He also scored the only goal in Southampton's first-round exit in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup .

From Southampton FC, who had just been relegated , he moved to Aston Villa on June 29, 2005 , where he, wearing the number 20 shirt, scored a goal on his debut and then took turns with the also freshly signed Milan Baroš in the storm. After recovering from an injury at the start of the 2005/06 season, he shot himself into the hearts of Villa fans by making a significant contribution to the win against rivals Birmingham City .

After Phillips performed poorly for Aston Villa in the second half of the 2005/06 season, rumors arose that he might return to Sunderland after his former strike partner Nial Quinn had taken over as coach. Instead, he moved to West Bromwich Albion on August 22, 2006 . After his contract expired, he signed a two-year contract with Birmingham City on July 8, 2008 .

On July 10, 2011 Phillips signed a contract with English second division club Blackpool . In January 2013 he moved to Crystal Palace on loan . On May 27, 2013 he scored the winning goal to 1-0 aet in the playoff against Watford FC and enabled the Eagles to advance to the Premier League .

In January 2014 he moved to Leicester City .

Phillips ended his playing career following the 2013-14 season.

National team

Despite his success at club level, Phillips was unable to score a goal in his eight appearances for the English national team , but mostly only got his chance at these games as a substitute. For England he was never on the field for the full 90 minutes.
