Eastern zone directory of German license plates
After the Second World War , the German license plate system was redeveloped. The system that is still valid today was selected from various proposals. It was limited to the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany at that time . In the Federal Archives list from 1953 is found, the indicator for cities and counties in the East , the eastern and occasionally beyond lists. In the literature this list was referred to as the " Eastern List " or " Eastern Zone Directory " . The official character of this list has not yet been proven. The list also contains entries for areas that did not belong to the German Reich after the borders of December 31, 1937 , because they had either already been separated as a result of the First World War (e.g. the Free City of Danzig , Posen , Kattowitz , Königshütte ) or were annexed by the German Reich after the beginning of the Second World War in 1939 (e.g. Sosnowitz ).
In some cases, after reunification in 1990, distinctive signs were given that correspond to those in the Eastern Zone Directory. However, there is no evidence of actual use of this directory.
Hints
The distinctive signs of the "East Zone Directory" take into account the administrative structure in 1945 in the eastern areas and in December 1949 in the GDR. The changes in the urban districts (urban districts) and rural districts in July 1950 and 1952 in the GDR were not taken into account.
Green fields in the table denote those administrative units for which the distinguishing mark has not been changed over the years and corresponds to the mark issued after reunification .
Gray fields represent administrative units where the distinguishing sign has changed over the years.
The numbers after individual distinctive signs in the list from 1950 mean that the number on the license plate begins with one of the numbers listed there. In addition to the specifically listed cases, there are others in which two districts / cities should share a license plate, as a comparison with the corresponding list for the Federal Republic shows.
List of West German abbreviations for administrative units in the GDR and the eastern regions
The spelling of cities and districts in ceded areas corresponds to the last official version, orientation notes (which are / were not part of the name) are in small letters and in brackets. Existing names are in the current version.
