Breda (stress on the second syllable, listen ? / I ) is a municipality in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant with 184,003 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019). It consists of the city of Breda and the villages of Bavel , Prinsenbeek , Teteringen , Ulvenhout and Hazeldonk . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

The city of Breda is located on the important trade route Rotterdam - Antwerp . Cars and railways run from Breda to Tilburg , Roosendaal and Utrecht . In the municipality, the rivers Mark and Aa of Weerijs come together, from which the name of the city is derived: Brede Aa , meaning “width Aa”, because the river widens.

Breda is on the German-Dutch holiday route Oranier Route .

The nearest airports are Amsterdam-Schiphol (international hub, 108 km), Rotterdam-The Hague (international and low-cost airlines , 63 km), Antwerp (international, 58 km), Eindhoven (national and low-cost airlines, 58 km) and Breda International Airport ( General aviation , 20 km). Breda has an old town with many historical buildings. The large market square (Grote Markt) is the center of the city. In addition to numerous cafés and restaurants, there are also the old town hall (Oude Stadhuis) and the Great or Our Lady Church (Grote of Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk) . In the southeast of the historic city center is the Catholic St. Anthony Cathedral .

history

Breda compromise

On February 16, 1566, 16 Dutch noblemen signed the so-called "Breda Compromise" in Breda, in which they asked for the abolition of the religious edicts that were tightened by Philip II and for the lifting of the Inquisition. This file was gradually signed by 400 Dutch noblemen, and the Geusen bund emerged from it . The Breda Compromise was the beginning of the Dutch uprising against Spain.

Declaration of Breda

Charles II of England issued the so-called “ Declaration of Breda ” from Breda in April 1660 before his accession to the throne , in which he promised the English, among other things, amnesty and freedom of conscience.

Peace agreements

Breda was the place of contract for several peace treaties:

  • In 1575 Spain made peace with the Dutch provinces; this did not prevent the Spaniards from besieging the city of Breda six years later (see below).
  • On July 31, 1667, after several years of sea war, an important peace treaty between Holland and England took place here. Both parties gave each other their conquests back and England approved a moderation of the navigational act (→ Peace of Breda ).
  • In 1746 and 1747, peace was concluded between France, England and the Netherlands in Breda.

Breda was besieged several times:

French rule

In 1794, Jean-Charles Pichegru conquered the whole of the Netherlands. The Batavian Republic was proclaimed in Breda on January 26, 1795 ; the latter made peace with France on May 16, 1795. Until then, the citizens of Breda were subjects of the Baron of Breda; he was also the Count of Nassau .

When in December 1813 the French garrison made a sortie as the Russian vanguard under Alexander von Benckendorff approached , the citizens rose and refused to allow the French to return to the city, which they tried in vain to recapture from Antwerp on December 20 and 21 . The French era finally ended after Napoleon's defeat in the Battle of Waterloo .

Second World War

Although French troops under General Henri Giraud marched in on May 10, 1940 ( first day of the Western campaign ) to help defend Breda, the city soon fell into German hands. The 1st Polish Armored Division retook Breda on October 29, 1944. For this, all soldiers of this unit were made honorary citizens of the city.

After the Second World War, the panoptic prison of Breda was the only prison location for German war criminals in the Netherlands, the " Four of Breda ": Willy Lages (released in 1966 due to illness), Joseph Johann Kotälla (died in prison in 1979), and Ferdinand Hugo from of Fünten and Franz Fischer , who were both released in 1989 after 40 years in prison.

Culture

Since 1971, the Breda Jazz Festival , dedicated to traditional jazz, has been held in the entire old town for four days in May .

Breda is home to the Chassé Theater in the city center, built between 1991 and 1993 by architect Herman Hertzberger , in which theater performances and concerts take place; A cinema and restaurants are also located in the building.
