1989 Le Mans 24 hour race
57. The 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 57 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , and 24 Heures du Mans Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , was held at from 10 to 11 June 1989 the Circuit des 24 Heures .
The race
As in the previous year , more than 200,000 spectators came to the race track on race day in 1989. Again it was the duel between the Jaguar team led by Tom Walkinshaw and a second racing team. After Porsche had reported in 1989 no works cars at Le Mans, the great opponent of Jaguar was the team of Peter Sauber .
The C9 got an improved Mercedes-Benz M119 5.0L turbo V8 engine. Four valves per cylinder provided improved gasoline flow rates. The cars were driven by Jochen Mass , Manuel Reuter , Stanley Dickens , Mauro Baldi , Kenny Acheson , Gianfranco Brancatelli , Jean-Louis Schlesser , Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Alain Cudini . Jaguar brought four vehicles to Le Mans. The XJR-9 got the last expansion stage of the 7-liter V12 engine , which made around 750 hp. With the AMR1 , Aston Martin returned to Le Mans after a 30-year absence from the factory. The two racing cars were powered by a 6-liter V8 engine. Brits Brian Redman , David Leslie and Ray Mallock were hired as drivers . In the car was a black mourning band the April 8, 80 year late John Wyer thought of as Aston Martin Clerk of 1959 Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori in Aston Martin DBR1 / 300 to date the only total victory of the English brand in this 24 Hour race .
Porsche decided not to go to the works, but provided the private teams of Reinhold Joest , Walter Brun and Vern Schuppan with logistical support. At Joest Racing , the two record starters Henri Pescarolo and Claude Ballot-Léna drove together in a team for the first time.
In the qualification, a C9 with Schlesser at the wheel reached a speed of 389 km / h on the Mulsanne straight, the second highest speed ever achieved here, after a WM P88 from Welter Racing , which had reached more than 400 km / h in 1988 . At the beginning of the race there was the expected duel. However, not between the Sauber and Jaguar cars, but as in the previous year, Jaguar dueled with the Porsche 962c . Nissan lost an 89C after just five laps when Julian Bailey collided with John Nielsen's Jaguar at the end of the Mulsanne . After five hours of racing, Jaguar suffered its first setback when the leading car with Derek Daly at the wheel failed. Then, surprisingly, the next five hours were led by the Joest-Porsche driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck and Bob Wollek , which just before midnight lost a lot of time due to a slipping clutch in the pits. When the leader Patrick Tambay came into the pits at 6 o'clock in the morning without gear oil for longer maintenance, a Sauber was at the top for the first time. In the end, Mass, Reuter and Dickens won with a lead of five laps over teammates Baldi, Acheson and Brancatelli.
For Mercedes it was the second victory at Le Mans after 1952 , when Hermann Lang and Fritz Riess won the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL .
