Venice International Film Festival 2010

Jury President Quentin Tarantino (2007)

The 67th Venice International Film Festival ( Italian 67th Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica ) took place from September 1st to 11th, 2010 . 4,251 films (including 2,395 feature films) from 102 countries applied for participation in the festival, which, along with the Berlin International Film Festival and the Cannes International Film Festival, is one of the three most important A festivals in the world. In the most important section, the competition (Venezia 67), 24 feature films competed for the Golden Lion , the main prize of the festival. This went to the US contribution Somewhere by Sofia Coppola .

The festival was opened with the American competition entry Black Swan by Darren Aronofsky , a psychological thriller which is set in the New York ballet milieu. This was in turn followed by the Hong Kong martial arts film Jingwufengyun - Chen Zhen by Andrew Lau and Machete by Robert Rodriguez, which was shown out of competition . The American film The Tempest by Julie Taymor was selected as the graduation film .

With the Hotel des Bains closed in 2010, a traditional element of the Venice Film Festival disappeared. Numerous filmmakers stayed here and interviews were held there. In addition, it had been the jury's meeting place in the past. The festival director Marco Müller also stated that it was difficult to fill the competition this year. Among other things, this was attributed to the increasing competition from the major festivals. Compared to the previous year, the organizers also had a budget of 12 million euros which was 700,000 euros lower.

As part of the film festival, a golden lion is regularly awarded for the life's work of a filmmaker. The winner was announced in advance of the festival: the Chinese-American director John Woo , who is one of the most important representatives of Hong Kong cinema.

The Italian actress Isabella Ragonese hosted the opening and closing ceremonies.

Official Sections

A total of 86 films were shown in the three sections of the film festival. 82 of them celebrated their world premiere.

competition

jury

This year's jury president was the American film director and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino .

He was supported by six other jury members:

Competitors for the Golden Lion

Countries represented in the competition for the Golden Lion for the best feature film (including co-production countries; the United States in gold)
The only German-speaking director represented in the competition: Tom Tykwer ( three )

The other jury members as well as the official program were presented on July 29, 2010. On August 8th, Jerzy Skolimowski's film Essential Killing was submitted for the competition.

24 productions from 17 countries (including a “surprise film” that was presented during the film festival) competed for the Golden Lion, the festival's main prize. As with the 2009 edition, most of the invited directors came from Europe (12), followed by their colleagues from North America (7), Asia (4) and South America (1). Films from Africa or Oceania were not invited.

US filmmakers were the most represented with six entries. Among them was Darren Aronofsky ( Black Swan ), who had already received the main prize in Venice for The Wrestler two years earlier . Oscar winner Sofia Coppola devoted herself to “the sad everyday life of the star cult” in Somewhere and focused on a famous actor (played by Stephen Dorff ) who receives a visit from his 11-year-old daughter ( Elle Fanning ). In her western Meek's Cutoff, the award-winning author and filmmaker Kelly Reichardt told the true story of an emigrant trek that got lost on the way to the US west coast in 1845. The award-winning artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel and Miral again followed the path of a Palestinian orphan (played by Freida Pinto ), who later got to know the resistance of the Palestinian people as a teacher . The contributions from North America were supplemented by Vincent Gallos Promises Written in Water , Monte Hellmans Road to Nowhere and the literary film adaptation of Barney's Version by the Canadian director Richard J. Lewis.

Twelve of the 23 directors ( Ascanio Celestini , Coppola, Anthony Cordier, Alexei Fedorschenko, Gallo, Hellmann, Álex de la Iglesia , Pablo Larraín, Lewis, Reichardt, Athina Rachel Tsangari and Tsui Hark ) made their debut in the Venice competition, while Darren Aronofsky, Julian Schnabel and Carlo Mazzacurati competed for the main prize for the third time. With La passione, the Italian presented a comedy in which a less busy director (played by Silvio Orlando ) was forced to stage a passion play in a Tuscan mountain village in a few days . Mazzacurati's compatriot Mario Martone showed the costume film Noi Credevamo , which reported on the battle for Italian national unity . In addition to Ascanio Celestini ( La pecora nora ), Saverio Costanzo was also represented in the competition with the literary film adaptation La solitudine dei numeri primi . It was the film adaptation of Paolo Giordano's award-winning novel The Loneliness of Prime Numbers with Alba Rohrwacher and Luca Marinelli in the leading roles.

Three film productions from France were invited to the competition. In addition to Anthony Cordier's tragic relationship comedy Happy Few and François Ozone's tumultuous tabloid comedy Potiche , Abdellatif Kechiche presented his period film Vénus noire . After the Frenchman won the Silver Lion in 2007 for couscous with fish , his latest film was about the fate of Sarah Baartman (played by Yahima Torres ). The black African appeared in the 1810s as "Hottentot Venus" on British fairs. It aroused the interest of French natural scientists, to whom it served as a research object after a miserable, early death.

The only German-language entry in the competition was Drei by Tom Tykwer . After the German director presented his successful film Run Lola Run at the 1998 film festival and had worked increasingly in international cinema in recent years, he presented a relationship drama that was set in contemporary Berlin . The story told of a couple (played by Sophie Rois and Sebastian Schipper ) who fell in love with the same man ( Devid Striesow ).

Filmmakers Takashi Miike , Tsui Hark , Trần Anh Hùng and Wang Bing were represented from Asia . With Jūsan-nin no shikaku (international title: 13 Assassins ), the Japanese Takashi Miike created a remake of the samurai film of the same name from 1963. Tsui Hark presented a mystery flick with Di Renjie zhi Togntian diguo ( Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame ) to Di Renjie , an official from the Tang Dynasty. The Vietnamese Trần Anh Hùng, who won the main prize in Venice for Cyclo in 1995 , filmed the novel of the same name by Haruki Murakami with Noruwei no mori . Wang Bing's directorial work Le fossé ( The Ditch ) was presented on September 6th as a "surprise film " ( film sorpresa ). This kept the possibility open to present films whose completion was uncertain before the announcement of the program or in which one feared intervention by official authorities. Le fossé played in 1960 in the Chinese re-education camp Jiabiangou in the Gobi desert , where prisoners were sentenced to forced labor for trivialities as counter-revolutionaries.

The only South American entry in the competition was Pablo Larraín's Post Mortem , which was located in Chile during the military regime of Augusto Pinochet in the 1970s.
