The district of Hilpoltstein belonged to the Bavarian administrative district of Middle Franconia . Before the start of the Bavarian regional reform in the early 1970s, the district comprised 84 communities.

history
District Office
On the occasion of the reform of the layout of the Bavarian district offices, the Hilpoltstein district office was formed on January 1, 1880 from communities that had previously belonged to the district offices of Beilngries and Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate .

On January 1, 1939, the uniform designation Landkreis was introduced in the German Reich . So the district office became Hilpoltstein.
On April 1, 1951, the municipality of Sornhüll left the Hilpoltstein district and became part of the Eichstätt district .
On July 1, 1972, the Hilpoltstein district was dissolved as part of the regional reform in Bavaria :
- The communities Altdorf , Emsing , Erkertshofen , Großnottersdorf , Kaldorf , Mantlach , Morsbach , Petersbuch , Stadelhofen and Titting came to the district of Eichstätt in the administrative district of Upper Bavaria .
- The communities Michelbach and Mörsdorf came to the district of Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz in the administrative district of Oberpfalz .
- The communities Biburg and Wengen came to the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen .
- All other communities were combined with most of the Schwabach district to form the new Roth district near Nuremberg . On May 1, 1973, the district was given its current name Landkreis Roth .

License Plate
On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the distinctive sign HIP when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . It was issued until August 3, 1974. Since July 11, 2013, it has been available again in the Roth district due to license plate liberalization .
