The 2. Bundesliga 2016/17 was the 43rd season of the second highest German division in men's football . It began on August 5th with 1. FC Kaiserslautern's game against Bundesliga relegated Hannover 96 (0: 4) and ended on May 21, 2017. From December 20, 2016 to January 26, 2017, it was due to the winter break interrupted. After the 1: 3 defeat against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on matchday 31, Karlsruher SC was the first to be relegated to the 3rd division, and Würzburger Kickers as the second relegated team on matchday 34. The two Bundesliga relegated from the previous year, VfB Stuttgart and Hannover 96, managed to get promoted again immediately.
