Charles Allen Culberson (* 10. June 1855 in Dadeville , Alabama ; † 19th March 1925 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party , of the State of Texas in both houses of Congress represented. He was also its governor from 1895 to 1899 .

Life

The year after his birth, Culberson's family moved from Alabama to Texas, where they settled first in Gilmer and later in Jefferson . His father David was politically active and was a member of the US House of Representatives from 1874 to 1897 .

Charles Culberson trained at the Virginia Military Institute , where he graduated in 1874. He later studied law at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville . In 1877 he was admitted to the Daingerfield Bar, after which he began practicing law in Jefferson. In 1887 Culberson moved to Dallas .

His political career began in 1890 when he was elected Attorney General of Texas. He remained so until 1894, when he announced his candidacy for governor of Texas; he won the election the following year. After two two-year terms in office, he decided to run for the US Senate , which he entered on January 25, 1899 after winning the election. After being re-elected three times, he remained in Washington until March 3, 1923; he was even confirmed in office by the population in 1916, although he could not campaign in Texas due to health problems - Culberson was also an alcoholic . During his early days as a senator, he was a member of the Lodge Committee that investigated violations of law in the Philippine-American War . He later chaired several committees, including the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1913 to 1919 .

In 1922 he ran again for election, but lost in the internal party qualification against Earle Bradford Mayfield , who then won the actual election. Culberson thus suffered the first defeat of his political career. One reason for this was apparently that he had taken a negative position towards the Ku Klux Klan . Charles Culberson then retired and succumbed to pneumonia on March 19, 1925. He was buried in Fort Worth .
