Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas (born February 4, 1990 in Cómbita, Boyacá ) is a Colombian road cyclist , whose greatest successes so far are winning the Giro d'Italia 2014 and Vuelta a España 2016 .
Childhood and youth
Nairo Quintana comes from a farming family from Cómbita in Colombia, 2800 meters high in the Andes , who made a living from selling fruit and vegetables. When he was seven years old, his father had a serious accident with a truck, had a total of 14 operations and has been physically disabled since then. The five children had to help out on the farm every day. The parents were unable to pay for the school bus for Nairo due to lack of money, and he had to ride a 20 kg bicycle to school in Arcabuco every day. A distance was 25 kilometers and led back up an eight percent incline.
His younger brother Dayer Quintana (* 1992) is also a professional cyclist.
Athletic career
Nairo Quintana, a mountain specialist, began his career in 2009 with the Colombian Continental Team Boyacà es Para Vivirla . In his first year there he was in Rivera stage runner-up on the sixth section of the U23 edition of the Vuelta a Colombia . At the Colombian Championship in Barranquilla , Quintana was national champion in the individual time trial of the U23 class.
At the Tour de France 2013 , Quintana made his international breakthrough. After a defect and a large time lag of his team captain Alejandro Valverde , his Movistar team focused on him from then on. Quintana attacked in several stages and soon turned out to be the best young professional, which earned him the white jersey . After he had achieved the second stage position behind the eventual overall tour winner Froome in the stage on Mont Ventoux , he won the penultimate stage to Annecy-Semnoz and finally finished second in the overall standings of the tour. In addition, he decided the mountain classification for himself.
At the Giro d'Italia 2014 , Quintana won the 16th stage with some controversy. Due to extreme weather conditions during the crossing over the highest pass of this Giros with 2758 m, the Stilfser Joch , the race management announced "slow driving" for the descent, but without neutralizing the race. Quintana attacked anyway, won the stage and took the lead in the overall standings. In the mountain time trial in the 19th stage, he was able to extend his time advantage with a victory and was the first Colombian rider to win the Giro d'Italia , ahead of his compatriot Rigoberto Urán .
In the 2015 Tour de France , Quintana finished second behind Froome and brought him into trouble on the last mountain stage to L'Alpe d'Huez . In the end, however, 1:12 minutes were missing from victory. Quintana had already lost 1:28 minutes on Froome due to a wind edge on the 2nd stage . As in 2013, Quintana won the classification of the best young professional, in the mountain classification, as in the overall classification, he only had to admit defeat to Froome. During the Tour of Spain in 2015 , Quintana fell behind the eventual winner Fabio Aru early on due to brief health problems in the first half of the race . But he was able to make up ground again towards the end of the tour and finished it in fourth place.
In 2016, he won the stage races Tour of Catalonia , Tour de Romandie and Route du Sud , before being beaten by Froome again in the Tour de France , finishing third overall, 4:21 minutes behind. The revenge he succeeded in the following Vuelta a España , which he won after a stage victory with 1:23 minutes ahead of Froome.
Quintana started the 2017 season with the declared goal of winning both the Giro and the Tour. In preparation for the Tour of Italy, he won the Tour of Valencia and for the second time after 2015 Tirreno-Adriatico . At the Giro d'Italia 2017 , a three-way battle developed between Quintana, Vincenzo Nibali and Tom Dumoulin . Quintana was able to conquer the Maglia Rosa twice, but lost it again in the time trial stages held shortly thereafter to Dumoulin, who was clearly stronger in this discipline, including on the final stage of the tour. Quintana finished the Giro in second place behind Dumoulin, 31 seconds back. At the Tour de France 2017 , he then proved to be unable to compete for the overall victory and missed a place in the top ten in the overall standings. Quintana stated that he felt tired and that his body was not regenerating as hoped.
The following year, Quintana's main interest was again the Tour de France . During the preparation, the first discrepancies between him and his team leader at Movistar regarding the course of the preseason became known. In addition, Mikel Landa , fourth in the Tour de France last year and signed by Movistar at the start of the season, was another aspirant for top positions in the Tour line-up, so Quintana had to share the leadership role at Movistar with Landa and Alejandro Valverde . After a defect on the first stage, Quintana was unable to build on his previous performance in the Alps and continued to lose time. In the Pyrenees he won the short 17th stage and briefly made up ground again in the overall standings. On the last mountain stage, Quintana could no longer follow the pace of the other favorites, also due to a fall the day before, and at the end of the tour fell back to tenth place overall. He then took part in the Vuelta a España , in which he did not get past eighth overall. For the first time since 2013, Quintana remained without a podium or top five placement in a major tour of the country.
