Thomas

Thomas is a male given name , which is also used as a female given name in various variants.

Origin and meaning of the name

The name Thomas is derived from the Aramaic te'oma (תאומא, ܬܐܘܡܐ) and means "twin". This is how it is interpreted in the Gospel of John ( John 11:16  EU ). The name is not proven before Christian as a proper name . Hence the Greek Thomas (Θωμάς) is probably a transcription of the Aramaic word.

distribution

The Christian first name goes back to the apostle Thomas , one of the twelve disciples of Jesus . It has been common since the Middle Ages . The term “unbelieving Thomas”, which is still meant today pejoratively , also goes back to the apostle because, according to New Testament tradition, he first doubted the resurrection of Jesus Christ . ( Jn 20 : 19-29  EU ).
