The Halberg Open Air (2016)

The Halberg Open Air (HOA, former student holiday festival ) was the largest free open air - Festival of the region Saar-Lor-Lux . From 1981 to 2017 it took place regularly on the last day of school before the Saarland summer holidays. The organizer was the Saarländischer Rundfunk , especially the youth wave 103.7 UnserDing . The festival area was the festival meadow in front of the Halberg radio station .

history

The first Halberg Open Air took place in 1981. At that time, the festival - originally known as the “school holiday festival” across the Saarland - was hosted by the “flagship wave” SR1 in the absence of its own youth wave and was almost the only (school) festival of its kind in Germany that managed without admission costs. In the first two years it did not take place on the Halberg, but on the St. Johann market in downtown Saarbrücken .

After using mostly regional acts for a few years, the names soon got bigger, so that the festival became a fixture over time. In the second year already, 8,000 students came, and the event, originally intended as a “concert day”, was expanded into a two-day festival.

Since 1985 it was conceived as a bimedial event (television / radio), so that the festival was mostly broadcast on SR television and in various third-party programs either in its entirety or in shortened form with a time delay. It was only in the last few years that this custom had been somewhat forgotten.

In 1996 the school holiday festival got its new name, and since 2000 the patronage has been the responsibility of the (then newly founded) youth radio 103.7 UnserDing.

Halberg Open Air also suffered from the partial loss of financial equalization between the ARD broadcasters: since 2006 the festival has only lasted one day. With the arrival of Christian Langhorst as program director of 103.7 UnserDing and SR1 in 2006, the band selection, which traditionally consisted to a large extent of the current chart pop, began to change to a more international line-up.

On May 2, 2017, the director of the Saarländischer Rundfunk announced that the event will take place on June 30, 2017 for the last time as part of a ten-point savings program due to the lower expected income from the broadcasting fee.

On June 22, 2018, a follow-up event called SR Ferien Open Air took place in St. Wendel . Musicians such as Genetikk , Joris , Lukas Rieger and Nico Santos could be seen with around 10,000 spectators in the old Bosenbach Stadium .
