Jonathan Trumbull junior (born March 26, 1740 in Lebanon , Colony of Connecticut , †  August 7, 1809 ibid) was the second Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States , Senator and Governor of Connecticut.

Early years

Jonathan Trumbull was born in Lebanon, the second of six children to his parents, Jonathan Trumbull Sr. and Faith Robinson. His brother John Trumbull became a well-known painter during the War of Independence . He graduated from Harvard in 1759 . In the years 1774/75, 1779/80 and 1788 he sat in the House of Representatives from Connecticut , whose speaker he was in 1788.

Trumbull was elected to the first , second and third Congresses and represented Connecticut in the House of Representatives from March 4, 1789 to March 4, 1795 . In the second Congress he was the speaker from 1791 to 1793, his predecessor and successor was both Frederick Muhlenberg . Trumbull did not seek a fourth term, but instead was elected to the Senate, to which he belonged from March 4, 1795 to June 10, 1796. He resigned to become lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut. When the incumbent governor Oliver Wolcott died in December 1797, Trumbull took over his post, which he held until his death in 1809. In 1804 Trumbull was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
