The Technical University of Munich ( TUM or TU Munich for short ) is the only technical university in Bavaria . With over 42,000 students, it is the second largest technical university in Germany ( TU9 ). Their headquarters are in Munich . It is one of the first three universities to be included in the “Future Concept” funding line in 2006 as part of the Excellence Initiative. In 2012 and 2019 it successfully defended its title as a University of Excellence. It is part of the Bavarian elite network and enjoys a high academic reputation.

172 courses are offered at the TU Munich. The core areas are the natural and engineering sciences as well as medicine. They are supplemented by mathematics , computer science , sports and health sciences , architecture and social sciences (especially economics , teacher training and political science ).

Faculties and locations

The Technical University of Munich has 15 faculties , including eight in Munich, five in Garching and two at other locations. The TUM has three main locations with the main site in Munich city center, the research campus in Garching and the science center for nutrition, land use and the environment in Freising - Weihenstephan . The main site (central campus site, north site, south-west site and south site) is located in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich, directly adjacent to the Pinakotheken between Heßstrasse in the north and Brienner Strasse in the south and is therefore a central part of the Munich art area . In the 1860s a new technical university was being founded in Bavaria. Contrary to many indications, the decision was not made on Augsburg or Nuremberg (where there had also been polytechnic schools for decades), but on Munich. Today's TUM was founded in 1868 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a (new) polytechnic school and officially referred to as the Royal Bavarian Technical University of Munich from 1877 . The architect Gottfried von Neureuther designed the main building of the university from Kelheim limestone based on the model of the ETH Zurich . The first director of the facility was the surveying engineer Karl Maximilian von Bauernfeind . To begin with, the college of professors included eleven engineers and architects, five natural scientists, three mathematicians and three humanities scholars. In 1875, Carl von Linde founded the first German machine laboratory, where Rudolf Diesel later learned. A total of five academic directions emerged, namely general, mechanical-technical, chemical-technical, structural engineering and civil engineering. From the winter semester of 1899/1900, the university was divided into six departments:

At the turn of the century the Laboratory for Technical Physics (today: Institute for Technical Physics and Solid State Physics ) was founded, mainly financed by the MAN group.

Turn of the century until the Second World War

In 1901 the university was granted the right to award doctorates . After the Technical University of Berlin , it was the second largest such institution. From 1913, Jonathan Zenneck headed the newly founded Physics Institute. In 1916, Friedrich von Thiersch completed the university's landmark, the Thiersch Tower, and German Bestelmeyer completed the buildings in Arcisstrasse. In 1922 the Munich Commercial College was integrated as a technical and economic institute; it was the forerunner of the later economics faculties. In 1946 the institute was transferred to the University of Munich. The holder of the chair for organic chemistry at the THM Hans Fischer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1930 for the synthesis of heme . The Weihenstephan University of Agriculture and Brewery was integrated in 1930. At that time, Rector Walther von Dyck was committed to close cooperation with business. In 1937 Max Schmitt was commissioned to plan a new university building in Nymphenburg, which, however, was never implemented except for the laying of the foundation stone in 1938. Several renowned technicians occupied chairs at this time, such as Willy Messerschmitt and Max Dieckmann . Nobel laureate Hans Fischer protected Jewish students and doctoral candidates during the Nazi era (laboratories in the catacombs ); he committed suicide in 1945 shortly before the end of the war.

Wartime, reconstruction and expansion

During the Second World War , 80 percent of the facilities on the main site were destroyed. The building fabric (from the ground floor) of the Neureuther building is now only on Gabelsbergerstrasse and in the inner courtyard behind the “ Bestelmeyer building” (south). University operations were resumed in 1946. After the war, the Technical University acquired the Oskar von Miller Institute . The Garching site was founded in 1957 when the Munich Research Reactor (FRM) went into operation . The university appointed Heinz Maier-Leibnitz as professor and successor to Walther Meißner . He was responsible for managing the institute. Rudolf Mößbauer was later entrusted with this. German aerospace research became a centerpiece of the university. Electrical engineering and mathematics gained importance through the PERM . Hans Piloty and Robert Sauer shaped the image of the computer system. Research in this area formed the basis for today's Leibniz computing center . In 1967 the medical faculty was opened at the Klinikum rechts der Isar . After the pre-clinical phase, many medical students switched from Munich University to the Technical University. The renaming from Technical University of Munich to Technical University of Munich (TUM) took place in 1970. The geochemist Paula Hahn-Weinheimer was appointed as the first woman to a chair in the same year. The Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Research Neutron Source (FRM II) was put into operation in 2004 as the successor to the FRM in Garching.

From 1995, the President of TUM was the chemistry professor Wolfgang A. Herrmann , who had made a name for himself nationwide as a university reformer. He was re-elected several times and was in office until September 2019. The fundamental structural reform of the TUM goes back to his initiative, which is what other federal states and Austria have based their new university laws on. The supreme, supervisory board-like control body of the university is the university council , to which u. a. Susanne Klatten , Norbert Reithofer , Peter Löscher and Edmund Stoiber were members. Modern history: University of Excellence

The Technical University of Munich was one of the first three universities selected by the Excellence Initiative for their successful future concepts.

From November 2006 the two clusters of excellence Cognition for Technical Systems (CoTeSys) and Origin and Structure of the Universe (Universe), the Graduate School (International Graduate School of Science and Engineering, IGSSE) and the future concept "TU Munich - the entrepreneurial university" were funded . TUM and LMU participate in the Excellence Clusters Center for Integrated Protein Science Munich (CIPSM), Munich-Center for Advanced Photonics (MAP) and Nanosystems Initiative Munich (NIM).

The Institute for Advanced Study

The TUM Institute for Advanced Study (TUM-IAS), founded in 2005, receives five fellowship lines through the future concept of the Excellence Initiative, which give outstanding scientists the freedom they need to develop their scientific creativity, promote academic schooling with young scientists and top-class research in an interdisciplinary context enable. The project aims to inspire girls and young women (from the age of 10) through a varied and exciting range of experiments and courses in scientific and technical matters. The two to four-day projects take place in the first three weeks of the Bavarian summer vacation at the TUM locations.

University library

The TUM University Library is a central service facility of the university and is open to the public for a wide range of users (members of TUM and other universities as well as private individuals). It includes ten branch libraries at all four university locations. The branch libraries are connected to one another via an internal delivery service.

Campus and student life

A building with additional lecture halls ("interim lecture halls")

While the Munich TUM locations are in the center of the metropolis, the Weihenstephaner and Garching campuses are on the periphery of small and medium- sized towns . Weihenstephan has taken a step towards the campus university with the construction of a student residence hall ; in Garching there are dormitories in the city.

Some subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science , teaching , medicine and business administration) are also offered by the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU), which is also located in Munich , but with different orientations or focuses.

Since 2006 the University and Research Center Garching has been directly connected to the Munich underground network. The Weihenstephan location can be reached with the S-Bahn line 1 or regional trains and Freising city buses.

The annual four-day IKOM of the Technical University of Munich is a career platform . It is used to support the graduate's transition into professional life. The u. a. UnternehmerTUM GmbH - Center for Innovation and Start -ups - sponsored by Susanne Klatten on the Garching campus is dedicated to promoting entrepreneurial talents and offers free business plan seminars, workshops, a support program for young executives (Manage & More) and support for prospective founders. This also includes office space at the Garching location.

The TUM Speakers Series is a series of events organized by students in which personalities from business, politics and science give lectures at the TU Munich.

Students and members of the mid-level academic staff at the Technical University of Munich participate in the Munich University Choir . In addition, some student councils and the TUM student representatives regularly organize cultural and party events on a voluntary basis, including the open-air festivals TUNIX (downtown) and GARNIX (Garching). The TUM Advent Matinee has been held in the Philharmonie am Gasteig every year since 2009.

In collaboration with TED to young scientists conferences organized and understandable recorded evening lectures and posted on the network to the insights of science and technology to transport the population.

Within Germany, TUM (in the overall evaluation) and its faculties (in individual evaluations) regularly take top positions in rankings.

Awards

In August 2017, the students of the WARR Hyperloop team won the “ Hyperloop Pod Competition” from SpaceX founder Elon Musk for the second time in a row .

The team of the working groups of Monika Ehling-Schulz from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in cooperation with Thomas Hofmann and Siegfried Scherer from the Technical University of Munich together achieved the ISO standardization for the quantification of an emetic (vomiting) toxin called cereulide , which is the heating process in food preparation can survive and therefore represents a problem for food safety, especially in processed foods. The exemplary cooperation across national borders was awarded the Otto von Guericke Prize of the AiF .

Third-party funding

The third-party funding of the Technical University of Munich increased by 67% to 246.3 million euros in the period from 2006 to 2010. In 2010, 19.9 million euros of this came from funds from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for special research areas and 30 million euros from the Excellence Initiative. The TU Munich received a total of around 150 million euros from the first phase of the Excellence Initiative by 2011. In the current funding period (2012–2017) it is expected to be around 165 million euros. In 2018, TUM raised third-party funding totaling almost 356.8 million euros.

An evaluation by the European Commission in November 2010 showed that the Technical University of Munich acquired the most funds from all German universities in the seventh EU framework program for research and technological development ( FP7 ). With the framework program, the European Commission is pursuing the goal of expanding Europe's leading position in the global, knowledge-based economy.

According to the 2018 Funding Atlas of the German Research Foundation , which breaks down the grants from 2014 to 2016, the Technical University of Munich took 18th place in engineering and 7th place in terms of personnel. In engineering, RWTH Aachen took first place in absolute terms and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in terms of personnel . In electrical engineering and computer science , the Technical University of Munich took third place. The Technical University of Dresden took first place in electrical engineering and the Technical University of Darmstadt in computer science . In the field of mechanical engineering and production technology , the Technical University of Munich took 9th place and RWTH Aachen took 1st place. In the natural sciences , the Technical University of Munich took 13th place in terms of personnel and 5th place in absolute terms. In the natural sciences, the University of Mainz took first place in absolute terms and in terms of personnel. In a competitive selection process, the DFG selects the best research projects from researchers at universities and research institutions and finances them.

Tuition fees

In the summer semester 2007, a tuition fee of 592 euros per semester was initially charged for studying at the Technical University of Munich . With the abolition of the administrative fee in 2009, it was now 542 euros, made up of 500 euros as a contribution to improving the study conditions and 42 euros for the student union fee .

On April 24, 2013, the Bavarian state parliament decided to abolish tuition fees. Since the 2013/2014 winter semester, only the basic fee for the student union and a solidarity fee for the semester ticket have been charged for all students. The amount of the contributions varies every year and can be looked up on the homepage of the TU Munich.

TUM Graduate School

In May 2009 the TUM Graduate School was founded by the Technical University of Munich . The aim of this institution is to enable all doctoral students at the TU Munich to gain additional technical and interdisciplinary qualifications in addition to their academic work and to promote international and interdisciplinary networking. Despite the name Graduate School , it is not a school-based doctoral program , but additional qualification offers that are intended to prepare graduates for the increasingly complex challenges facing managers in industry and research. During a so-called kick-off seminar, contacts can be made and in soft skill courses, academic writing and publishing and group work are taught in a targeted manner, and scientific misconduct is prevented.

The TUM Graduate School acts as the umbrella organization for all graduate centers at the Technical University of Munich with around 3,500 doctoral candidates. The forerunner of the TUM-wide doctoral program is the International Graduate School of Science and Engineering (IGSSE), which was founded in 2006 as part of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments. It promotes Open Access in science via the mediaTUM platform.

TUM ombudsperson for good scientific practice

In August 2019, the university's senate elected professor emeritus Heiner Bubb as ombudsperson for academic staff. He is particularly responsible for all questions of good scientific practice . He is the successor to Joachim Heinzl , who has held this office since 2016. This in turn followed Georg Färber (2011–2016).

  • In the building of the Faculties of Mathematics and Computer Science is currently the largest board in Germany (until 2004 Europe ) with a length of over twelve meters and more than two meters high.
  • In the same building, two parabolic slides run from the third floor to the ground floor , which are a particular attraction for visitors. Their shape corresponds to the equation and should represent the connection between science and art .

To mark the 150th year of the university's foundation, Deutsche Post AG issued a special postage stamp with a face value of 150 euro cents on April 12, 2018 . The design comes from the graphic designers Stefan Klein and Olaf Neumann from Iserlohn.
