  • The federal autobahn 70 (abbreviation: BAB 70 ) - short form: autobahn 70 (abbreviation: A 70 ) - also called Maintalautobahn - is a freeway that serves as an additional west-east connection from the federal autobahn 7 near Schweinfurt via Bamberg to the federal autobahn 9 near Bayreuth leads. It is part of the European route 48 and has a length of 120 kilometers . The BAB 70 was created in 1981 from the stepped federal highways 26 (new) and 505 .

    history

    Bamberg – Bayreuth section

Bridge over the Bayreuth – Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg railway and the 2183 state road

The Bamberg – Bayreuth line was planned as a supplementary line in the basic network of the Reichsautobahn in 1937 . As early as November 1937, construction began on the 9.7 kilometer section from the Bayreuth / Kulmbach triangle to the Kulmbach / Neudrossenfeld junction . The development of Kulmbach was important, among other things, because the National Socialist Federation of German Technology (NSBDT) under Fritz Todt maintained the Reich School of German Technology on the Plassenburg . In September 1939, the construction work and the preparation of the remaining route were stopped due to the war. In 1956, work was resumed and on November 21, 1958, the section to Kulmbach was put into operation as a single-lane motorway with two lanes. The second carriageway on the route now known as Autobahn 89 was completed twelve years later on October 1, 1970.

To improve the traffic situation between Bamberg and Bayreuth, the single-lane federal road 22 (new) was built between the Kulmbach / Neudrossenfeld and Stadelhofen junctions in the early 1960s and opened to traffic on November 26, 1964. On July 23, 1972, the line, now known as Bundesstraße 505, was continuously passable. Except for the last stretch, it had two lanes and was partially prepared for the subsequent four-lane expansion. In 1988, the construction of the second carriageway began and was completed on June 20, 1996.

Between 2013 and 2015, the oldest section between the Bayreuth / Kulmbach triangle and the Kulmbach / Neudrossenfeld junction, which has a gradient of up to 6.7 percent on Harsdorfer Berg and mostly has no hard shoulder, was renewed. The gradient of the route was reduced to 5.8 percent.

In the period from autumn 2015 to the end of 2016, the Würgauer Berg hillside bridge is to be replaced by a new building due to structural damage.

    Section Schweinfurt – Bamberg

    New Eltmann bridge

In the mid-1960s, planning began for a further connection of Schweinfurt to the BAB 7. The motorway feeder should bypass the city to the south. In 1966 the section up to the Werneck junction was opened to traffic, in 1968 the section to Bergrheinfeld followed , at the end of 1970 the Schweinfurt center was reached and on December 15, 1971, the 19-kilometer single-lane section to the Schonungen junction went into operation.

In 1971 the German Bundestag decided to continue the route as a motorway-like, initially single-lane Bundesstraße 26 (new) to Bamberg. The northern carriageway was completed in 1981 to Knetzgau. When it was upgraded to BAB 70 in 1981, the largely two-lane route was followed by nationally unique signage with blue BAB numbers on yellow signs. The construction of the section between Knetzgau and Eltmann began in mid-1983. Due to the Schwarzer Berg tunnel and the Eltmann bridge, it lasted four years and was opened to traffic on November 6, 1987, with a single lane with two lanes. The construction work on the approximately 20-kilometer-long gap to Bamberg, which was carried out with two lanes, then followed and was completed on October 10, 1991. This meant that the BAB 70 was continuously passable.

In autumn 1989, the two-lane expansion of the missing southern lane of the western section of the route began; it was completed on September 10, 1995 near Knetzgau. The Autobahn Directorate North Bavaria postponed the Schwarzer Berg tunnel and the Eltmann bridge for cost reasons. The second tube of the tunnel with the southern carriageway was started at the end of 2002 and completed in November 2004. Subsequently, the old, northern tube was subjected to a repair and safety upgrade by mid-2005, with traffic being directed through the new tunnel tube. Both tubes have been in use since mid-2005.

The second Eltmann bridge for the Bamberg carriageway was built in autumn 2004. With the completion of the bridge, the BAB 70 has been fully expanded to four lanes since December 18, 2006.

    Traffic volume

The route initially planned as an access freeway for northern Bavaria has developed into an important supplementary route for traffic to Thuringia and Saxony after German reunification in 1990 in an east-west direction . Together with the federal motorway 73 between Erlangen and Bamberg, the BAB 70 is a large-scale relief route for the traffic connections Nuremberg - Fulda and Nuremberg - Bayreuth. Orange-colored diversion arrows show the route if necessary.

The traffic counting station at the Bayreuth / Kulmbach triangle registered 7,500 vehicles a day in 1978, in 2005 it was around 22,000 and 25,000 vehicles are forecast for 2020. After the connection of the BAB 71 on December 17, 2005, 60,000 vehicles per day are expected in the Schweinfurt area in 2015.

    Planning status

A discussed eastern extension to the Czech Republic is not included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 . This continuation would meet the Czech motorway Dálnice 6 (Eger - Karlsbad - Prague) ( European route 48 ) after the intersection with the federal motorway 93 at the German / Czech border . On the Czech side, the motorway is currently under construction. On the German side, Europastraße 48 is to be expanded selectively as the B 303 .

A western continuation of the A 70 in the direction of Karlstadt and then bend, around Würzburg , to the A 3 is being planned as the B 26 .

    Trivia

As of January 1, 2016, the responsibilities for the A 70 were as follows:

    • in the area of the Schweinfurt / Werneck motorway junction with the A 7 (99/2) and the Schweinfurt / Bergrheinfeld junction (5) at the Erbshausen / Oberthulba motorway maintenance facility ,
    • in the area of the Schweinfurt / Bergrheinfeld junction (5) and the Bamberg-Hafen junction (14) at the Knetzgau motorway maintenance facility,
    • in the area of the junction Bamberg-Hafen (14) and the Bayreuth / Kulmbach motorway triangle with the A 9 (26 / 40a) at the Thurnau / Hirschhaid motorway maintenance office .
