Gunnar Heiðar Þorvaldsson , alternative spelling: Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson , (born April 1, 1982 ) is a former Icelandic football player . The striker , twice top scorer in Iceland and once in Sweden, played in his career in his home country, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Denmark, England and Turkey.

Career

Gunnar Þorvaldsson began his career at the Icelandic club ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar . He quickly established himself there and also played in various national youth teams. From 2002 he scored double digits in the national championship, whereupon he also attracted attention outside of his home country.

In September 2004 Gunnar moved to the Swedish Fotbollsallsvenskan to Halmstads BK . At the beginning of the following year, he made his debut for the Icelandic national soccer team in March 2005 when they drew 0-0 from Italy . In Sweden he was the top scorer in the following season in 2005 with 16 goals, and he also scored goals in the UEFA Cup . Halmstad fans voted him the best player of the season.

In the summer of 2006, Gunnar moved to Hannover 96 for around € 1,000,000 in the Bundesliga , where he signed a contract until 2009. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 26, 2006 in the game against Alemannia Aachen (0: 3), but ultimately he was unable to prevail on the Bundesliga club's offensive. In August 2007, he was therefore loaned to the Norwegian first division club Vålerenga IF for a year . Here, however, he was only used irregularly, in the first half of the 2008 season he played only three of his nine appearances from the start and scored two goals. He then returned to Hanover, but played no role in the planning there and was transferred to the Danish first division club Esbjerg fB in June 2008 . From there he was loaned to Reading FC in the Football League Championship for the second half of the 2009/10 season. In the summer of 2010, the Danish club awarded him again, he went to the Norwegian second division club Fredrikstad FK until the end of the year .

In January 2011 Gunnar returned to Sweden and was henceforth under contract with the Swedish first division club IFK Norrköping . Again he distinguished himself as a regular goalscorer. On August 5, 2013, Gunnar Þorvaldsson signed a two-year contract with Turkish first division club Torku Konyaspor . However, he did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player, he only completed twelve appearances during his first season in Turkey. In July 2014, he returned to Sweden again, where he signed a working paper that was valid until the end of 2016 with the Gothenburg first division club BK Häcken .
