Sapois is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Sapois is located at 623  m , about three kilometers east of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a cleared island of the Bois de Sapois, on a slope sloping slightly to the west above the Loudaine valley opposite Mont Rivel, east of the Champagnole plain.

The area of the 3.56 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The northern border runs along the Loudaine , a brook which, deepened in an erosion valley, flows to the west and feeds its water to the Ain . From the brook, the community area extends southward over the slope of Sapois to the extensive forest of the Bois de Sapois ( 736  m ). This height is limited in the east by the valley of a side stream of the Loudaine. A small portion of the municipality's soil lies east of this depression, with the highest elevation of Sapois being reached at 750  m on the slope at the height of Lent .

Neighboring municipalities of Sapois are Équevillon in the north, Lent in the east, Bourg-de-Sirod in the south and Champagnole in the west.

history

The municipality of Sapois was already populated during the Gallo-Roman period. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the domain of Château-Vilain. Together with Franche-Comté , it came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Sapois was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, mainly in Champagnole.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Champagnole to Sirod .
