Viereckschanzen in Bavaria

In the area of ​​the Free State of Bavaria , with around 170 facilities currently known and visible in the area, the most extensive inventory of late Celtic square entrenchments in Central Europe has been preserved. Most of the archaeological monuments , which are dated to the late La Tène period , have not been adequately researched.

The original purpose of the rectangular or nearly square earthworks is controversial. Possibly some of the fortified farms of wealthy farmers are involved, other entrenchments seem to have been used as sanctuaries or cult sites.

The present directory is based on the 2007 Atlas of the Late Celtic Viereckschanzen in Bavaria (text volume) by Klaus Schwarz. The associated atlas volume was already published in 1959, the listing there therefore lists the ground monuments among the old districts that existed until the regional reform of 1972 . The list here is assigned to today's counties and administrative districts . The monument numbers are taken from the Bavarian Monument Atlas.

In addition to the listed, remains or completely preserved site monuments, aerial photo archeology has now been able to identify around 110 other leveled or covered entrenchments.
