Albert was a place of pilgrimage for several centuries; On the top of the basilica was a golden statue of the Virgin Mary, which could be seen from afar and was supposedly found by a shepherd. Pope Leo XIII. Albert called the Lourdes of the north in 1898 .
During the First World War the church tower was hit by German artillery in January 1915; the statue of the Virgin hung from its anchorage at a 120-degree angle. In June 1916 British troops marched through the heavily damaged Albert and took up positions to begin the Battle of the Somme . The front line passed over Albert several times, which was completely destroyed in 1918. On the south-eastern outskirts, on Rue du 11 Novembre , lies the Nécropole nationale d'Albert with the remains of 6,290 French soldiers in individual graves and ossuary.
