Lotterer won a race and finished the season behind his teammate who finished fourth in seventh overall. At the Formula 3 Masters in Zandvoort , he achieved second position. After completing further Formula 1 test drives for Jaguar in 2001, he took over the position of test driver at Jaguar together with Courtney in the 2002 season . Lotterer did not have a permanent race commitment this year and he took part in a total of two races. On the one hand for Dale Coyne Racing in the American CART series, on the other hand in the FIA GT championship .

After Lotterer was no longer employed by Jaguar in 2003, he decided to move to Japan for Formula Nippon . At Nakajima Racing he became a teammate of Takashi Kogure . With two second places as the best results, he finished his first season in fifth place overall. He also started for Nakajima Racing in the Japanese GT Championship and finished 26th overall. In 2004 Lotterer won his first race in both racing series. In Formula Nippon, he was runner- up with two wins behind Richard Lyons . The two pilots were tied at the end of the season, but Lyons had better placements than Lotterer. He finished eighth with one win in the Japanese GT Championship. In 2005 Lotterer again won two Formula Nippon races. Since it was his only point placements, he finished fourth overall at the end of the season. Within the team, however, as in previous years, he prevailed against his teammate Kogure. In the Japanese GT Championship, renamed Super GT , he finished 17th.

In 2006, Lotterer switched to TOM’S in both racing series . In Formula Nippon he won two races and left his team-mate Takeshi Tsuchiya well behind with 30 to 2 points. Lotterer came third in the championship. In the Super GT, the season was more successful for him and he won the championship title together with his team partner Juichi Wakisaka . In 2007 he got a new team mate in the Formula Nippon with Seiji Ara . Lotterer won the race at Fuji , finishing fifth at the end of the season, while Ara was eleventh. In the Super GT he finished sixth with a win. In 2008 Lotterer had no victory in Formula Nippon. Ara managed to win a race this season, but in the overall standings Lotterer left his team-mate well behind with three second places. While Lotterer took third place with 49 points, Ara was 14th in the drivers' standings with nine points. Lotterer also had no win in the Super GT and was third.

Lotterer also took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race for Team Kolles in an Audi R10 TDI for the first time and, together with Charles Zwolsman, finished seventh in the overall standings. The two contested the race as a team of two after their teammate Narain Karthikeyan had dislocated her shoulder while jumping over the pit wall shortly before the start.

Lotterer in Formula Nippon 2010

In 2010 Lotterer contested his eighth season in Formula Nippon. With a win he finished second in the championship behind João Paulo de Oliveira . He also won two non-championship races in Formula Nippon, which were held after the end of the season. Within the team he prevailed against Ōshima with 43 to 24 points. In the Super GT he was runner-up with a win together with Wakisaka. Lotterer also entered the Le Mans 24-hour race again. For Audi Sport Team Joest , he formed a driver trio with Marcel Fässler and Benoît Tréluyer . In an Audi R15 TDI , the three drivers took second place in this race. In addition, Lotterer took part in one race each of the American Le Mans Series and the Le Mans Series for Joest . In 2011 , Lotterer stayed with TOM'S in Formula Nippon. Because of his additional involvement in endurance racing, he was represented in a race by Takuto Iguchi . With five wins from seven races, he decided the championship with 56 to 42 points ahead of his teammate Kazuki Nakajima , who had competed in every race. In addition, Lotterer started together with Nakajima in the Super GT. The two racing drivers finished the season in eighth place. The Audi R18 e-tron quattro, the winning car of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2012

In 2012 Lotterer became a regular driver for Audi Sport Team Joest in the newly founded FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). He formed a team with Fässler and Tréluyer. The trio defended the overall victory of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and also won the races at Silverstone and as-Sachir . With seven podium finishes from eight races, the three became the first WEC driver world champions this year. Lotterer also remained active in Japan in 2012 , but reduced his involvement to Formula Nippon, where he stayed with TOM'S. Lotterer won two races and finished the championship in fourth place. He lost to Nakajima within the team, who took the overall victory. Lotterer also completed a race in the Blancpain Endurance Series . In 2013 Lotterer stayed with Audi Sport Team Joest in the WEC. He, Fässler and Tréluyer achieved three more victories. This time the trio won the races in Spa-Francorchamps , São Paulo and Shanghai and made six podiums in eight races. In the world championship, however, the three lost to their teammates Loïc Duval , Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish and became runner-up world champions. In Japan Lotterer completed its eleventh season in the highest formula class, which was called Super Formula from this year on . He took part in four out of seven races and was first and second twice. In the championship he was level on points with the master Naoki Yamamoto at the end of the season and was second overall. He beat Nakajima within the team, who competed in every race. As in the previous year, Lotterer also started a race in the Blancpain Endurance Series.

In 2014 Lotterer contested his third season in the WEC for Audi Sport Team Joest. Together with Fässler and Tréluyer, he won the Le Mans 24-hour race for the third time in his career . In addition, the three won the race in Austin . As in the previous year, the three finished second in the World Championship. Lotterer was third in the Super Formula in 2014 with two wins. In addition, Lotterer again went to a race in the Blancpain Endurance Series in Spa-Francorchamps and completed two guest starts in the French GT Championship in Spa-Francorchamps, where he was once first. Lotterer also made his racing debut in Formula 1 in 2014. At Caterham , he received a cockpit for the Belgian Grand Prix . He retired in the early stages due to a technical defect. Lotterer competed in four different series in Spa-Francorchamps in 2014. Caterham's liquidator offered Lotterer to also drive for Caterham at the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ; Lotterer refused, however, because the prospect of success was allegedly too low.

In 2015 , Lotterer competed again with Fässler and Tréluyer for Audi Sport Team Joest in the FIA World Endurance Championship. The trio won the first two races at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps . When 24-hour race at Le Mans , they were third. The three drivers stood on the podium at every race. At the end of the season they were defeated by Timo Bernhard , Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber with 161 to 166 points and came second overall. In 2015 Lotterer also completed another season in Super Formula for TOM'S. With three wins he was the driver with the most wins, but he was defeated in the championship Hiroaki Ishiura and his team-mate Nakajima and was third overall. Lotterer also took part in a race in the Blancpain Endurance Series.

In the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship , Lotterer formed a driver trio for the last time with Fässler and Tréluyer for Audi Sport Team Joest, which withdrew from the championship after the season. Tréluyer was injured in two races, so Lotterer and Fässler drove two races in pairs. They achieved two podium placements. Lotterer also achieved a podium placement with Fässler and Tréluyer. Together with Fässler, Lotterer achieved fifth place in the drivers' world championship. In the 2016 Super Formula season , Lotterer remained without a win for TOM'S with three second places as the best results. In the championship he was still second with 30 to 33 points behind Yūji Kunimoto .

Lotterer switched to Porsche at the side of Neel Jani and Nick Tandy for the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship . The trio did not manage to win there, but steady podium positions, which brought them fourth place in the world championship. In the Super Formula , however, things didn't go particularly well: despite a victory in Okayama , he stayed outside the top 3 of the drivers' championship for the first time since 2012 and finished sixth.

In 2017/18 Lotterer competed for the Techeetah Formula E Team in the FIA Formula E Championship . He signed a contract for a year with the option of at least another year and became a teammate of Jean-Éric Vergne . After being noticed in the first races of the season mainly due to a few spins and accidents, he achieved his first podium finish in his fourth race, the Santiago E-Prix, with second place. He was also able to achieve a podium finish in Rome with third place. Overall, he finished eighth in the drivers' championship at the end of his debut season. He was clearly defeated by his teammate Vergne, who won the championship. Lotterer finished the season as the best newcomer. His contract was extended for the 2018/19 season. After Porsche left, Lotterer had to change teams again for the 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship and now competed for Rebellion Racing together with Jani and Bruno Senna .

Lotterer returned to Techeetah in the 2018/19 season . However, the team started as a DS Automobiles works team. With two second places as the best results, he finished the season again in eighth place. With two second places he also took third place in the overall ranking of the voestalpine European Races , in which only podium places in the races on the European continent were considered. After the season he switched back to Porsche, which is new to the FIA Formula E championship. Here Jani becomes teammate again.

In 2020 Lotterer took part in the virtual 24-hour race of Le Mans . One of his teammates there was Neel Jani. The Porsche 911 RSR with the number # 91 that he drove was 40th among the 50 participating teams.
